What is the best way to catch carp and grass carp?

I'm from kansas and the lakes around here are loaded with carp. What is the best bait or lure to catch them on?
I also want to know if there is a way to catch grass carp. I've never seen one in the lake, but there are some bigger than 4 feet in some ponds in my area. If there is a way, what should i use and what time of year.

The best bait for Carp is corn. THere are other things you can buy too that is pre-made by berkley. You can usually find that at Walmart. I usually just fish it on the bottom. The way you set-up the rig is like this:
1. Slide the desired amount of weight onto the main line (you must use sliding sinkers)
2. Tie on a barrel (or snap) swivel to stop the weights.
3. Tie a leader onto the other end of the swivel and tie the hook to the end of the leader.
The reason you use this rig is so that when the Carp picks up your bait he doesn't feel any weight attatched to the main line and get spooked. You generally will want to use a smaller hook because of the size of their mouths. I think I usually use a size 4 or 5. Here is a link to home made recipes for carp bait.

I agree with the idea that the carp should pick up the bait and run without feeling resistance. But instead of a swivel, I just pinch on a BB shot below the sinker, so it accomplishes the purpose with less knot tying.

The only way I know how to catch a Grass Carp is to set aside an extra rod with a big treble hook tied to it, a little weight and strong line and snag them. I've never seen any one catch a Grass Carp. I've personally tried for hours and not had any success.

I know this sounds stupid but you might want to try putting some of the grass you have growing in the ponds on a small hook and see if they'll eat it, I don't know if it'll work but hey why not

Grass carp are very hard to catch especially when there are other kinds of carp in the same waterbody. They can be caught on worms but usually some other type of fish like a bluegill will take it first. They are mainly herbivores, so vegetable-type baits actually do work well. You can use weeds from the pond, or also try lettuce or small cherry tomatoes.

; I caught this grass carp behind my house. What I do is mow my grass into the lake, this attracks the carp about 99% of the time. After I see carp eating the grass I throw either a drop shot or carolina rig, rigged with cherry tomatoes or raw cauliflower. I know its funny but as you can see it works!

Thanks! Those things get even bigger but I have'nt been able to get any of the real hawgs yet. I'm usually bass fishing, but after I mow the grass I figure what the heck and throw out a grass carp line. It's wild how those things can pull. I know a guy that says they're great eating when smoked but I have yet to try it.
