  1. Probably not, it's been hashed over a few times. Some of us don't use 'em and some do...
  2. When you flip a fish of any size into the boat, you normally end up with all the weight on a rod that's nearly vertical. No rod's upper section (no bass rod anyway) is designed to take 4 pounds of pressure from a steep angle. Would you take a 4 pound weight and tie it to a short line and swing it around up high with your prized rod? I'm betting not. It's the same thing.
  3. Give em' time, they are probably still drunk! ;D Or if they know about the 2 oz rule, they've already slit their wrists. :-/
  4. Actually, I consider 25lb 1oz to be the biggest, 22lb 5 oz should be the record but 22lb 4 oz is the record. Pending a quick, after the fact rules change, that's how it will stay. And a tie would be bogus... since 22/4 and 22/5 aren't a tie. ...lol The IGFA must be comprised of retired legislators. ;D
  5. I guess I didn't remember seeing your posts on them... no bait is right for everyone. (I'm still a lunker lure guy... at least until a 1/2 oz cavitron comes out to try)
  6. I was going to say search, but I just tried and the search timed out twice in a row. :-/ Anyway, google "wiggle rig" and you'll get all you need to know.
  7. Don't worry, Bobby... knowing burley, he probably accidentally had them on the rod with his 5.1 cranking reel and couldn't figure out why he had to reel so fast. ;D If that's not it, he's probably just looking to stir the pot... I can call him a drama queen, he has no incriminating pictures of me. eta: Bobby- speaking of fast moving buzzbaits, do you have my 1/2 oz prototypes ready for testing yet? :
  8. # 20 is pretty thick... the only way I could see using line that heavy is by replacing the spool... http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1244408845
  9. Brokeju, Do you have a source for this info? (other than Gary) Steel frames with SiC or Zirconium rings are offered by several companies, I haven't turned up the actual specs showing dimensions and weights, with any searches. The pictures don't show these guides as being "smaller" in fact, the frames on the SiC are quite wide looking, while the Zirconium guides look much like the Alps XXNZG series. Either way, I would love to see the actual weights, compared to other manufacturers guides, in same ring sizes. My suspicion is that they are only smaller and lighter than the guides he didn't use.
  10. Here is another that addresses the tools items needed to get started... http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1244506277/6#6
  11. I have. Although I only keep bass that die on me (rare) I had a 7 that was hooked badly and didn't make it. I eat a fish if I 'kill' it. I couldn't say it tasted any different from a 14" bass, at least I couldn't tell a difference. We all feel better when we see a big bass released, and almost all of us would let a bigger fish go... but when a fish is taken that is within the legal limits for harvest, your only real complaint is with your state's DNR, so call or write away.
  12. The Curado E's are very nice... and way nicer than anything else I've seen in the $150 range. Can't wait to see what comes out at ICAST though!!
  13. I catch 2-3 times more fish on the 168 than any other Ika color, in clear water. In dirty water I like 297 the best.
  14. lake record LMB is 10.06 according to the page... sounds like most don't report the DD's out there. Link to TPWD page on Sheldon: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/recreational/lakes/sheldon/
  15. That might suggest that they were dinged in the shipping process, or that you had them together when something dinged them... especially if they broke in the same spot. More than likely, that's a warranty. (as long as your story is factual)
  16. If Skeeter were paying for all of this I would put any color anywhere. What I meant was that the white contrasts better so if it was any kind of sponsorship deal, the white would be better. The red also looks good but is a subtle in comparison.
  17. Pure greatness! Nice fish. Hope you two get to fish together often!!
  18. Lots of good ones listed so far! IMO, one of the best films ever made... The Biscuit Eater 1940. The 1970's remake was nothing like the original. Also loved Last of the Dogmen
  19. Well, the mod or mod-fast won't allow the fish to eat the bait any more or less but with a softer mid section, the rod is less likely to pull the treble hooks out of the fish. Fast action rods will "work" equally as well as a mod for trebled lures, but it usually requires an angler to adjust more. And the mod won't wear out the angler as fast.
  20. If Skeeter is paying for it, I'd for sure go white.
  21. I think the size is mainly a reference to spool size. The smaller, lighter body is how all the fuego's are (or at least were) And the drags were absolutely butter smooth. I bought a Fuego 3000 a few years ago, a main selling point was that it was a 2500 size body (and much lighter than other 3000's) with the 3000 size spool. Overall weight was lighter than all but the most expensive 2500's. Would a bigger, heavier reel with the same spool size seem to be better quality? Didn't you look up the specs before purchasing the new reel????
  22. 10 trouble free years, and with NO maintenance either. : Regardless of brand, this thread is a "boredom b i t c h" looking for a problem. No leg humper here... I currently have shimano, abu, and daiwa reels in service. Unlike the haters, I actually buy for reasons other than brand.
  23. Any rod can break where scratched or nicked... in fact, that's where most failures do occur. The difference is that the newer high strain rate material blanks are thinner walled, not necessarily brittle. There is a big difference. When you just see high modulus you are probably getting something more brittle... if you see high modulus / high strain (rate) those fibers are much more resilient and not brittle. A brittle rod would explode when you set hook into a snag at close range... I don't want to speak for him but I'll wager a guess... In the thread you linked to, he cautioned against the split seats... if not done perfectly, they alone can cause a failure. (you can read by searching for "tharp style seats") Although he used the term brittle, I think he was saying that the split seats can be trouble, especially when combined with a thin walled blank. (which many people would mistake for brittle) I would guess he didn't want to get into a long post about blank material and construction.
  24. Same here. They don't fit my hands at all. (and my hands aren't that big) I applaud the effort in introducing new seats, I just wish it fit me. ;D
