  1. I've heard smallmouth LOVE them.
  2. okrod, no it is not worth walking at Fountainhead.
  3. Wow, sounds like a fantastic day!
  4. I tend to agree with RW about Quantums, but I haven't really fished their stuff that much, and we all know that whatever works best for you is what works best for you. If you enjoy a reel, that's all that matters.
  5. Thanks for reminding me about them! Now I'll remember to pack some for my smallie trip tomorrow.
  6. PM me for public parking access to the East bank that will put you on the side with the path and what I saw as the better side for bank fishing.
  7. Yeah, it should be fun. My sister's soccer team is in the state tournament, which is held at Radford University, so I'm tagging along with the parents to watch her games and fish.
  8. Jeff, from Goose Creek Golf Club down to the Potomac, the East side of Goose Creek seems to be park property and it has a pretty well defined trail that goes from the Golf Club to the Potomac.
  9. I will be fishing the section near Radford and Christiansburg at the end of this week. Can some of you guys with New River experience send me a few tips via PMs as well? Anything about lure selection, locations, water temps and flows, etc would be GREATLY appreciated!
  10. A J, It's a left on Golf Course Rd off of Rt. 7 if you are going west.
  11. those things look freaking awesome
  12. Wow, they look great.
  13. How about a Shak-E2 dropshot rig? Use the Shak-E2 as the weight on the bottom, rigged like a shakey head, but farther up the line there is a drop shot hook and dropshhot bait, that way the rig can fish both the bottom and the middle of the water column, and it can be cast and dragged/hopped/etc back to the boat because the Shak-e2 comes over cover better than many drop shot weights (and it will catch more fish than a dropshot weight will ;D)
  14. During our last outing to Beaverdam there were multiple people out in kayaks, and I was in a canoe, it required some extra effort, but it is a good way to get around out there.

Avalon john, are the fish just in the pool and stream running from the waterfall or do you have to fish the main river down there?
  16. Great Falls is not really worth it on the VA side. Avalonjohn, try a place called Riverbend Park. If you take a walk along the path upriver there are some good spots. PM me if you have trouble finding it.
  17. someone should seriously make an "OIL DISCUSSION THREAD" sticky...

Did you just fish the pool there at Scotts Run under the waterfall? Everytime I go there that pool seems to get smaller and smaller. I always wondered whether up or down river had any good spots from there.
  19. wow! very impressive! I used to chum for carp in a pond full of bluegills as well and I often found that while throwing the bread out to attract the carp, the ensuing bluegill frenzy often brought bass out as well. Sometimes I even used that as a bass fishing tactic; throw some bread out to get the bluegills out, then use a fluke or other baitfish lure, throw it out into the frenzy, and let it sink below to where the bass were waiting for the bluegills.
  20. Most people use lower gear ratios for crankbaits so that they can fish them with a slow retrieve. Ratios in the 6:1 range are for most other applications, while the high ratios like 7.*:1 are used for applications where you need to take up line very fast, like near heavy cover where you have to get the fish out of the cover very quickly before the fish wraps the line around the grass, wood, etc...
  21. I've never fished a buzzbait like that, but I've had a ton of success doing the same thing with soft jerkbaits.
  22. BPS Extreme 7'6 H telescoping flipping stick. You can get these on sale for $65 quite often. That's what I got for the same types of baits and it works great.
  23. ok, so...when and where is the next get together?

78 degrees?!? Wow. I need to get down there and check that place out. Is there a good amount of fishable shoreline or would I have to have a boat to make it worthwhile?
