I know many of us fish alone. I do much of the time. But, I also fish with a friend, whenever he can go. My friend Mike is seven years older than I am. He'll turn 73 soon. At one time, Mike had a reputation as one of the best fisherman in my area. Myself, and others looked up to him, and respected his skills as a fisherman. He quit fishing for several years, and I kind of helped him get back into it. Mike is a Vietnam veteran, and still walks with a limp from a leg wound from the war. He's slow moving, and I have to be patient with him, especially when we're getting into my canoe. He likes to start at first light, and his favourite way to fish is to set up on a deeper spot, and slowly work soft plastics or a jig. He's very observant about how the fish are striking.He usually always catches more fish than I do, and I like seeing him catch the bass. When he's fishing, he's on it, and very serious. He's always quick to lend a hand in any way possible. He gives away baits to kids we see at the lake, and gives them some instructions on the best way to fish them. Getting him back into fishing has given him a positive outlet, something to look forward to, and in his own way, help other guys. I consider him a very good partner, and I wish there were more guys like him. Do you have a good fishing partner? What's your partner like?

I consider it a good day if I can go and catch a few. If I don't catch much, I still consider it a good day.

Catts rig looks very good. You can use any skirt, frog type plastic trailer, or a section of plastic worm threaded on the hook. A pork frog trailer is a classic for this lure. As has been said, sharpen the hook really well, and give the fish a short pause before you set the hook.

For me, the enjoyment factor is important. Good rods and reels are simply more fun to use. And, there's a confidence factor also. Good gear is up to the task of hooking and landing good size bass.

We've had some good threads in the past about " defining" finesse fishing. It means different things to different fisherman. I look at it as lighter lines, smaller baits, etc. The first guy that comes to mind is Charlie Brewer, with Slider Fishing.

Good post. A-Jay has a chart that shows the effects of dehydration wich leads to heat exhaustion. This is important in this hot weather. Drink lots of water prior to your fishing trip, and while your out there. And keep in mind, if you ever reach a point where you can't urinate, you've gone way past time to hydrate. At that stage, you could need medical help.

A friend of my grandson's is getting into tackle repair. To help him out, I gave him the job of lubing one of my spin reels. The reel is a 1000 size Diawa Revros. He had my reel one day. When he returned it, it was super clean, but felt sluggish. I opened it up, and it was clearly over greased. Way to much grease on the gearing. When I removed most of the grease, the reel felt better, and seemed smoother. When I used to use a ABU Cardinal 4, an experienced reel tech told me that most good reels are built to a tight tolerance. This is what makes them feel smooth to begin with. My old Cardinal ran best almost dry, with just a tiny amount of grease on the gears. Sometimes, a brand new reel will feel sluggish, but still smooth. They get over lubed at the factory, when they're built. I pointed this out to my grandson's friend, and told him to use a small model paintbrush to put only enough grease on the gears to cover the gear teeth. This is usually all you need on most reels of any type. It seems like over lubing reels is a common thing. What method do you use to grease the gears in your reels? P.S.- I learned about the paintbrush method here on BR. Bulldog1935, MN Fisher, and Jay Francho said this works well. And, it does.

I think most serious fisherman like to buy quality gear. Cheap gear will fail when you need it the most. Good qaulity tackle is more enjoyable to fish with, and if taken care of, will last many years.

Try a Johnson Silver Minnow, Heddon Moss Boss, or similar weedless spoon. Add a trailer and fish it over the top of these pads.

I use lighter lines and smaller baits in clear water, which I fish quite a bit. It seems to draw more strikes for me.

I'm retired, but am very busy also. I set aside days to fish, then always go on those days. Darth, enjoy your family time, you'll be back out there soon enough. My dad would say, family, job, then fishing.

Spinning reel? Some guys like to tighten the drag and backreel to land fish. We've had a lot of threads on this topic. Newer reels have much better drags, so backreeling is not as popular these days.

You'll never get the guy in this video to be soft or sensitive. Why? That goes against the tough guy image he's putting out there. His whole thing is acting like a tough guy. There's a million guys like him out there. Is it all an act? It very well could be.

In my dad's day, 90 percent of guys acted like men. It wasn't popular to be anything else. So, that's all my old man knew. And he lived his life this way. He also expected my brother and I to do the same. Some of the toughest guys I've ever known never had to act tough. They just were. They were kind and had compassion for people. But, everyone knew they were tough. My dad was this way. Find that middle ground and be tough. You don't have to put on any fronts either. Folks will appreciate you just being you.

My own dad was a real man. WW2 combat vet, very patriotic also. I'm not sure what he would think about all this. I've followed in his footsteps since I was young.

I wish more companys would make old school motor oil. They say green pumpkin is motor oil, but it's not. As a reference, Mr.Twister still makes a good motor oil color. It's still a bass catcher too.

Purple is my all time favourite too. It's been a really popular color in Missouri for as long as I remember.

Plastic worms have been the most consistent fish catcher for me, especially in hot weather. Here's my own selection for 2023. Mr. Twister Phenom 6". Roboworm 41/2 and 6". Mann's Jelly Worm 8". Brewers Slider. 4". Zoom Trick worm 6" Zoom finesse worm 4". Culprit 71/2 and 10". This group covers the bases where I fish. I use t rig and sometimes Shakey head. For colors, it's purple, grape, motor oil, and solid black. What plastic worms are in your lineup this summer?
