Ok here is your answer. No it wasn't designed that way. Not sure what a silent anti-reverse is. Yes you will have to dig into it. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

Zebco 20/20 question
It is probably the Zebco ProStaff 20/20 Spincast Ball-bearing drive for smooth performance, Positive Pickup design, silent anti-reverse, rugged Magnum Gears, star-actuated fade-free Magnum Drag, power handle, and stainless steel front cover. Pre-spooled w/premium line.... Don't know what you paid but the MSRP for 09 is $15.95.. It is what I have called a throw away.. Tight Lines!!!

Tips on Adjusting a Curado
Turn all brake collars off. Set the rate of fall using the CC. Then set the brakes collars 2 on just like your old Abus have, and you should be set up... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Beginner question on rods
I wouldn't....... The 1st or stripper guide (usually a short double foot #10mm or 12mm guide) will cramp the way the line comes off of the reel (will probably ball up in front of the guide). Your line is coming off the spool in large curls, and, the large size 20mm stripper guide is tall and tames some of the coil until the coil gets to the (smaller) running guides which help straighten it out in the cast. Just an old rod builders .02¢ Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Backplay
If I might interject here....... 8-) The back play everyone is talking about doesn't mean a reel is inferior, just means that particular reel is using a one-way bearing with less/lighter tolerance's. Most of the older Shimano® & Daiwa® (since both MFG's were mentioned) reels were using 6 pin one-way bearing packs. They were upgraded to 12 pin one-way bearing packs which were tighter tolerance's and had less back play. If ya don't believe me then open an older green Curado next to a newer E series reel, you will see two different bearing packs, same way between the higher/lower end Daiwa® reels... Just my observations over time...... Good Luck & Tight Lines All!!!! [smiley=fishing1.g

Couple of questions for Reel Mechanic
The reels are discontinued, and I doubt that there are any parts available (I know they aren't from Shimano)... (Circa Oct96) Also discontinued reel/s. Yes have the factory service the reel just before it's one year anniversary. Then to maintain it, full service yearly (depending on amount of use).Tight Lines!!!!
