Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

Welcome to the six pound club.

Great fishing today! First time I saw females and males both on beds! Caught the fish in the picture casting a jerkbait onto his bed, he crushed it as soon as it hit the water. Lost 3 nice fish in the 3 to 4 lb range. Was trying to catch a big female off her bed, she wouldn't bite anything. Nor would the male. I tried jerkbait, swimbait, texas rig and even dinged her in the head with a jig! She would swim in circles around the bed then come back to sit. I would estimate her to be in the 7 to 8lb range.  The male was a large beat up fish. I'll try again tomorrow!

Something small in the bed and just leave it there. Takes allot of patience. Pic if you get her.

Decided to use the rage tail cut-r. Had a huge blow up app 8 feet from the bank 5 minutes after starting. I just cane - poled the fish in. Had 2 -3 long follows, had 1 clobber it and let go, and probably the biggest fish bit all but 1 inch off the bait. Caught another one that picked it up off the bottom...

Went out last Thursday after hearing a big splash - wanted to see if we have a gator. Couldn’t find anything  so cruised over and chatted with few different neighbors out on their docks enjoying the evening (I was making a circle around the lake). Last neighbor -2 houses to left of ours -and I had just finished a conversation about his new duck chic.  Decided to cast a shallow diver in a clear pocket of weeds. It sank a little- gave soft short tug then felt soft pullback. Set the hook and IT WAS ON!!!  Yelled Fish On! and Bobby started back down the hill. Knew it was a big one as drag was being stripped and my little 10’ plastic boat started moving towards the deep! Then it turned me towards shallow!!  Ohhh if I could keep her on and wear her down I might be able to land her!   Heart racing and blood pumping I hung on and remembered NO SLACK! TIGHT LINE!! DON’T LET HER THROW YOU!!  After the Most Exciting 5-8 minutes she was near the boat.  Lipped HER in, “BOBBY I NEED PICTURES!! He says “Don’t have my phone “. “WELL GO GET IT!!!”  He ran up hill and returned ???. Meanwhile I broke my old tackle box lid by ripping it open to get scale. Weighed in my New PB @ 8.2 Pounds!!!  She was 2” longer than my 24” scale too!! Released her safely back to her home ???. Barely had rear treble hook in her mouth at this point so was easy to get out and very little damage ???

Goodness gracious! Congrats on that, lucky that bass didn’t capsize your vessel!!!

Wow I bet that was exciting.  I would have been talking out loud to myself playing that brute.

Funny the difference a week makes. Not any interest in plain Keitechs but they were on the underspin.

Ran into an unexpected school of some serious slabs. Can't remember the last time I caught crappie this big.

Nothing beats a swim jig the last few days, Thursday was an epic day with 9 fat girls over 18" with this one looking the heaviest and coming in at 23".  Funny thing is later I was reeling in a 3.5lber on a A rig and a massive girl followed her to the boat trying to steal the lure.  Absolute largest bass I've ever seen outside of BPS tanks, she was definitely the PB that got away without even biting....

Not a bad morning. Started at 8:00 with a Whopper Plopper. Nothing doing on top so I switched to a Zoom Trick. Nothing there either. Went to ol’ reliable #956 Senko WR and caught this guy.

But the bite was slow. And I looked in the tackle box and decided to break out a jerkbait my daughter gifted me for Father’s Day last year, which I believe is a Googan Scout. Tried a few times before with zero action. Tied it on (I will say it has sharp hooks!) and on the second cast it got hammered as I was jerking it. Just a hair under 3 lbs.

spacer.pngspacer.png

Cast it out a few more times in the same spot and it got hammered again.

spacer.pngspacer.png

Threw it out a few more times (same spot) and this time it got whacked as it was floating back up.

spacer.pngspacer.png

The jerkbait bite seemed to stop so I switched to a paddletail swimbait (I think it’s a Keitech Swing Impact in green pumpkin but not 100% on that) and it got hammered as well.

Now it gets a little strange. So as I’m reeling this bass in, a teen (maybe from 14 to 17) walks up and asks what I caught, so I show him. As I’m talking to him I see he has some sort of plastic-bodied spincast reel and what looks like a new rod. It was, as he told me he just bought it for $4.00. He asked if I minded if he fished close to me, as he likes to talk while fishing and many others have told him no. So I kinda felt sorry for the kid, so I said ok. So he’s got some type of orangish stick bait on a “not a TR hook” rigged TR, and I have to admit, that little plastic spincast rig was getting him 3/4 of the way across the pond. I’m not sure what he was doing, but it looked like he was swimming it more than anything. He kept saying he was getting strikes, which I’m sure were just snags. Then that $4.00 rod bent. And he had a good one. I know it was at least 5 lbs, maybe 6, right out of the spot I caught all my earlier bass from lol. When it got close I tried to get him to work it my way so I could grab it with my fish grippers, but he tried pulling it out by the line and bloop! It threw the hook. I was crushed. He wasn’t lol. He asked if I thought he could catch it again and said likely not after all that action. He re-rigged a Zoom Trick (I picked out a 3/0 round offset hook for him) and he left to try elsewhere. That was enough for me, so I packed up and headed home.

But hey, a great day! Never caught three bass on a jerkbait before so another notch in the bedpost.

Dink fest on Alamo Lake Saturday. Definitely heading back this fall for a good topwater day. 18 dinks on underspins. Trees are everywhere. Good confidence booster fishing a new body of water and figuring things out.

Had the pleasure of taking a late afternoon trip with the family. Feel super blessed to have a couple teenagers who love to go out fishing.

Fishing wasn't as good as I anticipated (65* water) but we still caught quite a few on underspins.

Good day on Lake Havasu. Drop shotting margarita mutilator roboworms and green pumpkin biffle bugs on a swinghead.
