Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

Had my boss and his son over today . Primary goal was bream. The 2nd bream Alex hooked , as he had it almost to the dock , a bass clobbered the bream and he hooked the bass right in the corner of the

  • So I went fishing today, and caught a 9#. Scale bounced between 8-15 and 9-2, but let's call it a 9, shall we? NLMB trout eater.   Super slow rolling a 8" weedless on the bottom in about 15

I'm always impressed by your ability to haul in such nice northern largemouth in nasty conditions.

Trio of four ish bass on whopper ploppers. Bone choppo 120, black choppo 90.

Way to fish, Chef, @Team9nine, and @softwateronly.

We have 40 m.p.h. winds coming. I don't think I'll be fishing.

  • Super User

@ol'crickety that's smart for sure.  We had sustained 25mph out of the N at times today, and I was about to tie up to someone else's pier and walk home.  My canoe goes sideways fast with both a trolling motor and a paddle.  Luckily, the wind and snow died down for a bit and I was able to get back safely.  It was a wild mix of weather today that didn't affect the bass one bit.

@MIbassyaker it's the water not the fisherman.  I can't be too far from you, we're around 131 and 12 give or take some miles.  DM if you wanna take a trip.

An impromptu trip to South Carolina had me packed lightly and with no fishing gear, but that was barely the point of going down there. My mom had to have open heart surgery, so fishing wasn't on my mind. That said, the ICU kicked us out each night, and with so many HOA ponds scattered within the Dell Webb development it was hard to say no, and many of which were much larger than I'd imagined. My father further encouraged me by pointing out this spot and that spot, so I decided to do a few 1 hour trips out at dusk to see what's what.

He has a few spinning rods in the garage, but they were all sketchy. My brother-in-law and his sons are all ham-fisted, so every rod was busted one way or another from their previous expeditions. I settled on a Black Max spinning rig with about 7" of its tip guillotined off, and a 2000 sized reel spooled with 20lb mono. Guitar string on a spinning reel. Uhg. Ran to Wally's for a bag of black/gold flake 5" Big Bite worms and some screw lock hooks.

These ponds all have one particular feature; Steep banks lined with tall grass. Pops has been unable to fish them for several years because it's too tough on his knees, so I went to different spots than he recommended that looked good to me with the caveat of staying out of the tall grass due to rattle snakes. I did just that.  Sheesh.

I started off throwing a wacky rig for a bit, but no play. Went to a standard weedless rigging and did the slow drag thing and started getting bit. Then I started converting, but it was weird with a rig that lacked much feel at all. Good thing having that 20lb mono on after all though as I needed to shore flip every fish 5' up then 5 feet over the grass. Had about 6 shake off into the grass, but luckily, they flopped back in. Good for them that they did, because no way I was going in to save them. I imagine me getting killed by a poisonous snake during her recovery might've pushed mama over the edge.

Got some bites, and they all fought like crazy. It was a nice way to end at least a few days of stress and monotony sitting in a hospital room from dawn til dark. Mom's home today and doing well, and I'm finally on the board again.

@PhishLI  Awesome fish, but even more awesome mom is making a recovery.....that's like catching a DD 🙂

If you ever had to catch a Bass without breaking your tamales, I think you might quit the sport.

I'm glad I asked him if there were any gators around as I walked out of the garage with my gear. He said "not lately" but casually mentioned to listen for rattlesnakes! No biggie, right? No mention of having any anti-venom on hand either. "Have fun. See you soon, maybe." 🤣

Fished a 25-30acre golf course pond in college slap full of 5+ fish.......and about a dozen Alligators.

Our only option was to night fish this place wink wink lol, amazing what a 5lber will motivate a Bass degenerate to do 🤣

I was beating the bank, and about 10 yards in front of me a gator took off into the water at mach 3, scared the life out of me.   Kept fishing like a champion though lol.

Man that brings back good memories.

Glad your mom's recovering well @PhishLI. I'll add her to the prayer list for awhile.

Open heart surgery is a big deal. She must be sore. Hopefully she'll be feeling better in a week or so.

I'm so glad you had a chance to stretch and catch some bass. And, as always, I love your command of language. When it comes to word wrangling, you sure can cowboy, Phish.

Pert near everybody and their pals are catching bass. Here's outside my back door five minutes ago.

Starting to transition off the crappie bite as it continues to fade. Caught 3 greenies today, but one of them was one of the right ones.

Edit: 7-1/4 pounds

Took the day off to get some fishing in before the next series of storms come in and the NCAA tourney starts (#priorities 😆).

Incredible March weather today with temps around 70* and water temps around 58*, but I could not find consistent fish deep or shallow. Strange day and the biggest fish of the day was a 3lb rainbow on a spark shad deep into a creek channel.

tfrAhzp.jpg

Caught a few smallish spots on finesse tackle and couldn't even get a follow after throwing a 10" swimbait for a couple hours. Hopefully we'll get into a spring pattern after this next series of storms passes through (snow expected tmw night).

Took a friend and a kid fishing yesterday and we did alright!  Caught em all up shallow around newly growing vegetation.  Jake caught another one that was close to 3 we forgot to photograph and we caught a few little guys.  All in all a very fun day on the underspin and swim jig!
