  • Got out for a short trip today. 7:30 - 11:30.  It was a balmy 31 degrees, with a cool refreshing breeze blowing 10-15 out of the north. The ol rock pile produced again, giving up a 40" and a 31". Gott

Launched the canoe at 7 pm and saw fish jumping . Tossed my tiny rapala around again on the 4’10” ultra light and got 5 white bass and two skipjack, missed a few more . Got dark at 8:15 and I beached at the dock, fast and furious. Going to try to feed the skipjack to something massive in the AM before work

Yeah that is a nice one, I catch them too in my neighborhood on the east coast. How are you holding it? Lol looks like it's floating in midair or you have your hand in its gill I guess

He does that with a lot of his fish.  Its magic.

Here's another one with the magic hold.

I just put my hand in the gill plate like you would a walleye or northern pike. If you lip those critters you’ll come back missing a digit or two. Plus holding bass by the lip can tear the ligaments in their jaw.

A guide showed me the gill plate grip years ago and said it was the “conservation technique” lol.

No I get it, I lip them but I also support underneath so there is no excess strain on the mouth. Peacock bass are very fun to catch, I would even dare to say they fight harder than a largemouth

Hey

Caught my first two Mayan cichlids for the year so far. I was wondering when they would show up 🎣🤘 the one on top has a big appetite 😆

I definitely think they fight harder than largemouth. Initially as hard as a smallmouth, but smallmouth never tire/give up where the Peacocks eventually do… they are somewhere in between, but I have never caught a 5-7 pounder either..

Yeah and man sometimes they really blow up on a surface lure....the initial strike I can't really tell if it is a peacock or largemouth until I get a glimpse of yellow lol

@DitchPanda, normally I would, and I thought about it……. But I already have fish in the freezer so it got a reprieve

Gotcha...I'm hoping to catch an early season cat this coming weekend. Alot of years we have ice still  now but I've already been out 4 times this year in open water chasing down panfish.

Yeah... I know it's only 28", but I spent six hrs fishing in a full blown 44 degree monsoon to catch it, plus six straight previous skunkings so, IT'S GETTING POSTED!!! 😂

@TnRiver46 So what did you do with the lamprey? The first one I caught hitchhiking on a bass I tried to smash with my foot. It didn't want to die that way so I had to resort to a knife. They have such nasty looking mouths with all those circular teeth.

Great job Tim, I'd be super proud of that fish too......only the real ones fish in miserable conditions.

Thanks Alex. I'm just happy to put one in the net. It's been super frustrating lately. That's my first muskie since 2/17. Six trips, around fish every trip with only a couple short strikes and a lost fish to show for it.

It came off the fish when I chucked it back in the water , very much alive. They give me the creeps haha
