Running errands took me by a dam so I stopped and fished in a deluge and got soaked , forgot my pants weren’t waterproof……..

 

snagged threadfin and pitched them out on bobber rig, of course I got 7-8 drum but they were all big

I was hoping it was something else every hookset, but alas, a bunch of consecutive monster drum. Did see a sturgeon tho! 

Apparently if you pitch T - Rigged TRD in Goby Bryant to a Striper they'll eat it.

Went to a “numbers” lake for crappie just to have some fun and swing on a bunch of fish. I finally caught a white crappie down here - first one I’ve run across, and it turned out to be a two pounder 😎

Here’s a good comparison - different lake yesterday, but same result. Top is a 2 lb black crappie (TH); bottom a 2 pound white crappie I posted the other day (WE). You can also see the weather difference, as yesterday was a north wind post frontal day compared to the cloudy day before. Yesterday’s fish was my 45th crappie over 2 pounds for the year. It’s been a fun few months 😎

Sorry I'm late, guys, been a nutso busy month - Russ, I caught one that size on a fly rod once, fishing from a dock on Lake Livingston.  

We made our annual Arroyo trip at the new moon earlier in the month.  Our days included a 21-mi bike ride through Laguna Atascosa NWR (98.000 acres belongs to bikes and ocelots)...

to get to a fabled fishy spot that's even harder to get to by shallow skiff or kayak - the dam on the Cayo, a tide basin limit far up the twisty shallow channel from the barge navigation canal. 

And it's ok, for the 1500 calories we burned, imbibed 700 along the way - the front bag fits an Ice Mule.  

In our 3 nights, the schoolies never arrived at our dock nite-lite on the navigation channel, but we made a fine fish fry, finesse fishing the nursery trout that live here, 15" to 18" -

- first night stringer.  

Consider we each caught 6 under 15" for every stringer fish.  Jerry at our bait shop got a charge of live shrimp, but (except for the drum below) these fish wouldn't touch it - everything was caught on 2" swim shad tandems, a few on 3-g metal microjigs, imitating the balls of glass minnows under our sodium lamp.  

 

The next night, we rounded this out with two more stringer specs, but the excitement was a 20" black drum,  which made huge fillets.  Susie cut them small to add to our last-night fish fry, along with oven fries, perfect cole slaw, and peach-blackberry cobbler. We ate like kings.

Of all things, the drum was caught on Zebco, which likely improved the excitement.  The big fish took drag from go, and made several runs against 3-lb drag set. The only way to recover line was to pump the rod.  Must have been 10 minutes until we got a tail slap on the surface (they like the deep channel). Knew right away it was a drum and not a snook - UPS truck instead of drag racer...

Got a bunch of these today.

If I were to try and catch Catfish I'd probably skunk every time.   9.66 pound Blue on a bladed jig yesterday.  It didn't twist and turn like a Cat.  It was fast, pulling like heck, and shaking it's head.  The first time I got it near the boat I saw a gray/silver flash.  I thought it was a big Spotted Bass.  I suppose I got "catfished".  

 

 

Those are the best size to catch…somewhere between 8 an 12lbs is where they are still athletic but still heavy.

Gave my BFS setup(T3 5g spool 8# braid) quite the workout. The rod tip is rate down to .6gram so it was bending quite a bit. Overall handled it nicely.

 

 

 

Got me a nice bait and dragged it around for a while, no takers . Somehow released alive after all that 

I caught a 64 passenger school bus today in 28 fow, not even my 17 pound test Tatsu could hoist it up! 

Caught a few crappies today, with the biggest being a 12.5 incher my friend Jason caught.  Some warmer water temps would certainly help.  April 6 is the earliest I've ever had this boat in the water.

Mom and little brother were at a birthday party this afternoon, so Lake and I went fishing for a couple hours. Too windy to be on the water, so we stood on the bank and catfished. I was trying to catch something for bait with nightcrawlers on the bottom, but Lake ended up catching a channel cat and his first ever sturgeon on them instead. 

 

First cast this morning off the dock, new PB striper. Absolutely freight trained a full size A rig.

Yowzah! That’s a fish right there. Me and my teenager have been catching schoolie sized hybrid stripers and white perch on Lake Norman lately… we could use them for bait for that one!

Big brown and a 'bow

We went fishing for 3.5 days out of Puerto Vallarta.  First day was slow with one 50 pound tuna.  I decided to drift 25 miles off shore for the night rather than go to an anchorage.  The plan was to catch squid at night an try them for bait the next day.  

 

The plan worked to perfection.  The seas were calm and the squid came to the lights.  We were able to put 30 squid in the live well, and were back on the fishing grounds at daylight.  First drift we landed the 3 tuna in the picture.  By the end of the day we had landed 9 tuna between 80 and 130 pounds.

 

The next night I couldn't find any squid, and we had to fish frozen ones the next day.  We only landed one 100 pound tuna, one dorado, and a big snapper.

 

The third night I found squid again, and the tuna liked the fresh squid.  We were able to land 4 120 pound tuna before leaving for home.  Great trip with lots of fish, but very little sleep.

 

All the tuna were caught on squid suspended on the surface below helium balloons.

My excellent crew does most of the work.  I didn't gaff a fish, or tie a knot the whole trip.  I did get up at 3:00 Am to catch squid while every one else got some sleep.
