A-Jay's Inaugural Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~

Featured Replies

The cold is terrible right now, the ice fishermen love it though lol.  If we get the 40 degree weather they're calling for this weekend, guess who's putting on his waders and pulling steelhead?  This guy! :D

HMM...

Maybe it's time to move.

The Russians send their adversaries to Siberia. What are you charged with?

I suspect the ice-out will be delayed. How long does 4' of ice take to melt?

It was -58 degrees here in my part of Illinois today. 4 inches of snow coming tomorrow. On top of the piles of snow we already have. With this brutal deep freeze, polar vortex from the pits of hell, I've realized that ice out might come later than I was hoping. And yet, year after year, I choose to live in this crap hole. I just need warmth and open water.

I open my eyes
I try to see but I’m blinded by the white light
I can’t remember how
I can’t remember why
I’m lying here tonight

And I can’t stand the pain
And I can’t make it go away
No I can’t stand the pain

How could this happen to me
I made my mistakes
I’ve got no where to run
The night goes on
As I’m fading away
I’m sick of this life
I just wanna scream
How could this happen to me

Everybody’s screaming
I try to make a sound but no one hears me
I’m slipping off the edge
I’m hanging by a thread
I wanna start this over again

So I try to hold onto a time when nothing mattered
And I can’t explain what happened
And I can’t erase the things that I’ve done
No I can’t

How could this happen to me
I made my mistakes
I’ve got no where to run
The night goes on
As I’m fading away
I’m sick of this life
I just wanna scream
How could this happen to me

I don't think I'll know until it happens with the weather we've been having the last few weeks lol

Screenshot_20190131-094744.png

Hopefully it be arriving here in PA. High of 48 yesterday and highs of 57,45,60,58 the next 4 days after a low of -2 last week.  A couple days below freezing this weekend and back up to the low 40's.

Drove by the biggest local lake at lunch and no open water to be seen, but the rain and temperature should change that.

54 days till the first scheduled tournament, fingers crossed for 0 more days of complete ice coverage.

At this point so much of it feels like a dream.

But in about 2 months and 9 Days or 9 weeks and 5 days or 68 more days,

I'll be looking to turn it all back into reality.

This is starting to suck . I'm ready to set out some lines on a swollen river and catch something , anything . Make a camp fire , drink a six-pack , sleep in a tent , cook a catfish over an open fire ...

Me too. Reminds me of the bullhead run on Honeoye Lake, back in NY, back in the day. I assume it's still going on, or should be. If you got up high, you could see nearly the entire lake rimmed in lantern lights. Really cool scene. Bullhead fry in every restaurant, all... 3 of 'em! :)

We did the same on Port Bay.  There'd be a dozen or more rods laying at the end of the dock, and all us kids anxiously waiting for "our" rod to start jiggling.  Next day, we'd clean and fry them up.  Later, in my early 20s, I'd catch up a bunch on my own, and bring them down to a family of migrant workers that were always camped out at the south end of the bay.  I'd give them my catch, on the condition I get to fish and eat with them.  Always a good time.  This went on for a few seasons, and then they stopped showing up.  That was the very best catfish I ever ate.

While my projected Ice-Out date of 15 April is only 2 months or 8 weeks and 2 days or 58 more days away,

we've been getting hammered with snow & cold past 3 weeks or so.  Call it relentless.

So unless there is a major climate swing the other way, I fear this deal is going to be extended - again.

And it might be by several weeks . . .

On a positive & most excellent note - deposit to the next trip south of the border this fall went out in the mail.

I looked at pics from last spring. I was on my home water March 10th. Ain't gonna happen this year. There's currently a foot or more of ice, it's snowing and will continue on and off all week, and lows still in the teens.

Drove up to my home lake Sunday to see if the draw down had refilled and it's back up.  All protected areas from the wind had ice around the edges.  It started to snow on the way back.

No sweat A-Jay.  This is going to be a banner year for you !  I predict a teener down south and some monster smallies.  Anyone who sacrifices a GTO deserves a payback big time.
