Mono

I'd have to first decide, do I want to throw baitcast (fluoro) or do I want to throw spinning (braid) for the rest of my life. If I couldn't make that decision, and felt I couldn't give up either, then I'd have to go fluoro

Interesting, why would you choose fluoro over braid for baitcast?

I'd rather the choice were between Money & Happiness  ?

I'll split the difference - co-polymer, specifically YZH.

Maxima Ultragreen.  It worked well, when there was no Floro, the only braid was dacron, and many people didn't realize monofilament was a big word for fishing line.   I use all  types of line now, but remember catching lots of fish when mono was the only line.

I’m with you. But...in the spirit of the choices given lol, I’ll take mono.

Why? Simple. I have 1,000’s of hours of experience fishing with mono, vs a couple months with braid and none with FC. I’m comfortable with what it will and won’t do and it holds no surprises.

It would not kill me as of today to use nothing but Trilene XL or Big Game from here on out if I had to.

Braid doesn’t belong on a baitcaster except for the few instances it does ? Anglers put way too much emphasis on sensitivity these days, and I’m not convinced its that important an attribute. Today’s fluoros give me enough improved sensitivity over nylon/copoly/hybrid lines while still maintaining much of positive attributes of them, so I don’t need to reinvent my entire system. YMMV

If leaders were allowed in this thought experiment, then I'd use braid. But I would say leaders don't fit the spirit of the question, so I'd go and say fluorocarbon, I think, Tatsu and Assassin. I am wary of stiff line jumping off the spool so I'd need a line that doesn't do that. Assassin and Tatsu are pretty supple. Fluoro doesn't have the best knot strength though. If I had more experience with some good mono, maybe I'd say mono, but I haven't tried enough mono yet to say I'd be satisfied using it for the rest of my life.

YZH for sure.  It's the best jack of all trades line I have used.  I could get by with just fluoro pretty easily as it's what I use the most of, but I would rather frog with heavy weight YZH then heavy weight fluoro.

The OP's question is a multiple choice question.  All three lines have their place.  I've done every kind if fishing I do with mono at some point in my life and I could do it again if necessary.  So my answer is (B) mono.

I’ve already made that choice, and it’s braid. Unless something new comes along, I’ll never use anything else.

Fluoro by a mile

Fluorocarbon

For most of my life, I thought Omniflex Mono was the only option and caught thousands of fish and lol’d at the guys spending $20+ per spool of anything else.

Not sure when I got brainwashed into thinking otherwise.

Fishing with mono for more than a few decades with various brands of mono, and then using braid and fluro for about 10 years, I'd have to pick a top quality mono If I had to choose.

   Nylon monofilament.    jj

I've used mono, fluoro, and braid.  I always come back to the mono.
