What is the max size / diameter Mono or FC main line you will spool up a 2500 / 3000 size spinning reel with before manageability problems occur ?

If you use Tatsu/InviZX or Mono XL You can go easily up to 0.38mm(17lb test) with no problem at all.

I have used 17-lb mono/fc on deep spools, and always liked 14-lb better. 

Seems to be a big step in line behavior moving down to 12-lb. 

The differences there are larger than 0.40 mm on the heavy end, and less than 0.35 mm on the lighter end. 

Bending heavier mono on smaller diameter spools always causes worse line memory. 

 

 

10lb is the highest I'd go. 

I'll go up to .011 diameter - course that means different tests for different lines

But I never go above 8 unless it's braid to leader

This for me also. Up to 10lb on spinning reels, over 10lb for bait casting.

Whatever the reel says the upper size is.

Thanks for the replies , that .010 ~ .011 Mono / FC line diameter on a 2500 / 3000 spinning reel seems like a good rule of thumb . 

I don't go above 6#, but could probably deal with 8# line.  Anything bigger, and I'm using a baitcast reel.

I know you said mono or fluoro. But you can get away with a much higher lb. test braid as your main line. I use 20 lb. braid on that size reel. You can simply use a leader of mono or fluoro in whatever size you like because it won't be on the reel. Fish aren't smart enough to look 5' up the line to see the braid. Braid also has the major advantage of almost eliminating twisted line problems. To cut down on the cost you can fill the reel halfway with the cheapest mono you can find, then fill it the rest of the way with braid. Just my $0.02. I did it and never looked back. I have serious doubts bass in my waters even care about straight braid, no leader.

*Looking to experiment with FC main line (no braid) for drop shot and shaky head , so based on comments I will try #8 lb. InvizX (.23mm diameter) as max line size on a 2500 / 3000 series spinning reel . Looks like this is still a minority set up now as Pro's have left FC main line on spinning reels by the droves in favor of Braid + FC leader set up .

I'm no pro, but if you're fishing finesse stuff in the wind, straight flouro still has it's place!

I use mostly 12 pound trilene on my 3000 and 10 on 2000 .I go either way on the 2500 , usually 12 though.

For spinning gear, I would go up to 10lb in FC and 8lb in mono but my favorite is 6lb FC.
