How do you identify which line is on your reels?

Certain things I remember great - old addresses I lived at for example.

Other things I suck at remembering.

I go by memory.

There's a method to the madness which helps.

I try to keep it simple (relative term)

because I certainly am.

I carry about as many as AJay. I use mono, fluoro, and braid.  I know what # test of what line is on each of them.

i keep it simple and have memorized what i always have on my 9 combos.

(3) spinning combos all have 15lb braid to an 8lb leader

(2) light crank and jerkbait rods have 12lb

(2) all purpose 7'3 mh rods have 15lb

(1) 7'1 heavy jig rod has 17lb

(1) 7'6 flippin stick has either 17lb or 20lb

and i have one extra casting reel with 50lb braid for frogging or flipping

15# Big Game on the Daiwa baitcasters

10# Big Game on the SLX

10# Big Game on the spinning reels.

I use my memory, but I keep it relatively simple and have less than 20 combos to keep track of. I'm not going to judge others for having difficulty or needing a tool to help. I had a bad concussion as a young adult after flipping a car and have noticed lapses in memory here and there as I get further into my thirties. If someone tried to tell me those issues were because I was lazy or because I use a cell phone I'd tell them to kick rocks, you do not know everyone's circumstances.

In the words of John prine, “I forgot to remember to forget”

Flouro is clear

Mono/copoly is green

Braid is braid

I simply keep it all in my head.  I can't remember birthdays, jokes, or what my wife wanted me to pick up at the store, but I can remember what size, brand, and how old every line is on all of my reels, including 40 or more Salt water reels, I use for work.  I can even remember what leader material, and which knot I used.  I even remember what line is on my friends reels.

If I wrote it down in a notebook, I would forget where the book is, and if I put it on my computer, I either wouldn't be able to find it, or wouldn't be able to remember a pass word to get at it.  I guess I have what my wife calls selective memory.

This is awesome.  I was thinking the same thing and you summed it up perfectly.

But overall I pretty much just remember but I do keep a spreadsheet that I try to update.  I don't replace braid unless I lose so much that it is running low on the spool.  I spool fluoro in March and again midsummer so it is never much older than a couple months max.  Mono- is so cheap I'll replace it when in doubt.

I also keep the excel file, plus KK puts stickers with each reel that you attach to  reel to note the line and test.

Despite not being able to count scoops of coffee I put into the coffee maker in the morning, I can at least remember what line is on my small selection of several rods I use in the kayak. Phew

I'm sure I would remember my phone number if I ever caught a bass on one.

Most of the time I can't remember to put the specs in a file.  If it is Neon Tangerine and on a MH rod, then it is 12# Siege.  If on a Medium, then it is 8# Siege.  If silver, then it is AN40...same pound tests.  If green, Big Game...same pound tests.  The rest is unknown unless it is one of the few reels I remembered to note in my file.

Used to have a good memory, but I can't trust it much anymore.  At least I can remember my current cell phone number and the landline number that I had 13 years ago.  I remember impressing my daughter once when we looked up the number for Pizza Hut and then when she wanted pizza again a few weeks later I was able to rattle the number off.  Not likely to happen today.  :(

Yup.  Cell phones are bad for memorizing numbers.  And some will be the death of a few of us.  Those that get creamed when a driver runs a red light while playing a game on theirs.
