My two cents, it's like anything else in life: you get what you pay for. You get back what you put into it, whatever it be. Tight lines! 

In my lifetime... Probably about the same as the budget of a third world country.

Could save $800 a month if you bought a tent too, in fact that cuts out your utilities as well, extra grand a month, kids are going to grow up with that big money. 

What I currently use? Probably about $5K. 

In my tourney years I was probably spending 3K+ in entry fees a year

Actually the money I'm spending above SS is the kids inheritance.

In total probably close to 2k in gear, I've lost or broken probably close to 400ish. Booooooo

Well if you don't count your boat and  tow vehicle fishing can be pretty cheap

if that's the way you roll. One rod & reel, a few hooks,  a couple of bags of soft

plastics and you're good to go.

Way too much but not nearly enough . Surely , if I spend just a little more , I'll catch 1) more 2) larger fish ?

     When I retire, I plan on spending as much of my time fishing as I can.  Since I will be fishing when I retire, I consider any tackle purchases as an investment towards my retirement, a 401 tackle plan.  I also currently fish, which relieves stress, which improves my health, so any tackle I purchase is basically part of my health care plan.  I also fish for recreation, which as every body knows, all work and no play is not good for a quality life.  Making any tackle purchase part of a quality balanced life.  I also occasionally eat the fish I catch, making tackle purchases necessary to provide subsidence for my family.  In other words, I spend everything on my fishing addiction.  The exact dollar amount is confidential, legally accessible only by myself, and the Bait Monkey.

How does that stay standing when you're running full out in the boat?  I'd think the wind would grab it pretty good.

My UPS driver told me today that he's never seen someone get fishing poles that required signatures before, which reminded me of this post... We'll just leave it at that...

Those are the ones I don't fish with.  All the ones I do fish with fit in a 3700

I do not worry about how much I have spend, I'm more concerned about what I will spend in the near future..

I have invested thousands of dollars into my fishing hobby, and every single penny was worth it.

I work hard, and make decent money.  I don't spend more than I make.  I don't worry about what I spend.   

On  advice of counsel I reserve the right to plead the 5th amendment.

 

I have really cut back lately and have spent less than $100 on tackle this year.

I know I gave a smarty pants answer before, but the total figure is WELL into the 5 figure range, and no, I don't own a boat. My basic philosophy for this is that as I am still working, I can adjust my financial situation around this now, doing it at 65+ is going to work far worse, if at all, and short of medical catastrophe, I will die with a fishing rod in my hands if I have a say in it.
