Does anyone else find prepping their tackle box oddly satisfying and supergluing plastics to jig heads therapeutic?

Featured Replies

Every time I am about to do a river trip, the night before I float I reload my main tackle box and plastics wallet.  Here is what I take:

One 3600 Plano Edge filled with a variety of 2.75” and 3.25” paddle tail colors, crank baits, poppers, ploppers, barrel swivels and snaps.

A small plastics wallet filled with TRDs

An even smaller wallet for blade baits

7’1 MF St. Croix LTB versatile

6’10” MLXF LTB Dropshot/Finesse

7’1” MHMF Mojo casting rod

For some reason I find it strangely enjoyable supergluing paddle tails and TRDs to jigs, and get a similar feeling to having a stocked fridge when I step back and admire my freshly loaded tackle box.

I must!!,... Can't tell you how many times I have rearranged my tackle boxes thinking,.., " Oh, I'll like this much better!

Or,... Organizing my bulk storage. Bought myself a Ptouch labeler to make it even more OCD! ??

OCD?

I use my P-Touch to not only label the outside of the boxes, but the compartments themselves as well. While two cranks from different manufacturers may have the same weight and running depth - since they are 'different', they each get their own labeled compartment.

I didn't do that, but I did label terminal tackle slots 1/0, 2/0, etc. Then I bought one with the sizes molded in.... Only to realize you can't see the molded in callouts when loaded with hooks and weights!! ?

Back to the Ptouch!! ?

I know I'm in the minority, but no, prepping equipment is tedious to me whether it's fishing, cycling, tennis, or diving.

What’s next?  You guys gonna start gassing up your boat before you launch?  ?

I think it was an NFL coach that said, 'preparation is invaluable, preparation is useless'. So prepare and organize, but know once you get on the water everything could change, and what you prepared for goes out the window.

It usually does!! My wife is great and fishes with me most of the time. She laughs that we spend all this time prepping all these different baits for our fishing trip up to Ontario and invariably, they want something different and we may not use any of it!

This year,... Had all the usuals set for some good smallie fishing and they didn't want any of it, no tubes, no wacky, no senkos, very few mepps. This year they were hot after craw colored OG Slims and chigger craws or blue pearl paddletails like zoom boot tails or cane thumpers. Tore them up on those and they didn't want much else! ?

Nope.  I reorganize my gear at the beginning of the year and if i need to do it for a specific trip and then again at the end of the year.  I primarioy fly fish and I can say that those of you who enjoy doing this thing I will gladly have you come over, I'll provide the beverages, and you can fulfill your inner OCD by sorting through my fly boxes lol. In case you don't know, a standard plano 3600 box could easily hold a hundred or so flies :)

Now this thread has me thinking that maybe I should go sort my fly boxes since I can't fish....

Someone said recently in a thread that they don't ogle their tackle.  I do.  No shame in my game.  I was just admiring some of my wood baits last night. ??

Not me. I toss out whatever and refill when I get home. Closest I get if putting whatever I want on the ends of the line, sometimes add or remove a leader depending on the water the night before fishing.

Can't call it satisfying, its just something that needs to be done.

Pre-Trip Tackle prep is a major source of fun for this Basshead.

Rigging baits & leaders as well as loading & unloading baits as needed.

I'll even throw pre-trip Truck, Boat, Motor & Trailer mainainance as part of this deal.

Adds nicely to the hopes, dreams & anticipation of every pre-dawn adventure

Kayak fishing for me itself is therapeutic and I try to keep everything organized. Having rods ready to go is a must for me since having a stroke with a left hand partially working takes me a long time to re-tie and much, much longer if Im on the water.

Getting my tackle rigged the night before a outing is definitely part of the fun for me. Any, and I mean ANY excuse to fiddle with my tackle. Boat will be loaded up the night before as well. It’s really enjoyable for me, and makes those 3:30am drives to the lake that much easier.

Yet another moment where I'm going to be way more serious than necessary, but OCD is a serious mental disorder and nothing like the common assumption and usage of the acronym when people like things done a certain way.

Meticulous is a very underused word.

That is a lot of prepping fo shizzle. I like matching rods as well....it is appealing to my eyes and nourishes my OCD.  If I find a rod series I like...I want several of them.

Oh boy. That's way too neat, AJ. If I went out on your Lund I think you'd just end up suplexing me over the rail, then punching me in the face when I came up for air. I'm a little too "artistic" to hang with that level of org.

A-Jay    I wasn't able to go fishing this weekend.  I was dealing with this fact in an adult way.  Then AJ has to post another one of his tackle porn pictures, and now I'm dealing with my lack of fishing, like a spoiled child.

Count me in with the minority too then. I do not particularly enjoy rigging up and prepping, but of course will make sure I am ready anyways. I stay very busy and fish a lot, so rigging time is the same for me, just tedious. Just got back from a run in the sweltering heat.

All I do with the tackle box is go through it and make sure I have enough of each bait.  However, I do find that sharpening hooks can be quite relaxing.

I carry a very small assortment of lures and tackle so my prep is meticulous. I find it as therapeutic as tying flies and jigs.

I’m new enough that I can’t look at a hook and just recognize if it’s 1/0 or 2/0 or 3/0, If I take ‘em out of the package I gotta label ‘em somehow

For me it's the age factor kicking in.

I prepare my tackle the night before each outing. Or if I’m going for an evening fish, I prepare it the day of.

I annually go through my lures, tackle, and re-spool reels every spring. Removing tackle that hasn’t been used is removed. I can’t stand clutter, and that includes in my tackle storage.
