Another vote for Tombstone.

Ok, I guess that's more than one.

Open Range. Costner and Duvall.

It's almost impossible to pick just one. I like so many

All those already mentioned, with The Magnificent 7 being my favorite.....but I am surprised no one mentioned The Hateful Eight.

Unforgiven, True Grit (the original), The Quick and the Dead

Oh my. ONE?

I don’t know if I can do that. Westerns are likely my favorite genre of films. It’s tough to look back over 80-90+ years of films and compare them and pick just one as the best. I call foul!!!

One western that’s likely not on most folk’s radar that’s excellent is The Ox Bow Incident. It’s not a shoot’em up oater, but the story and acting is top notch. So is Shane.

Some have a little humor, such as Rio Bravo and its step-brother, El Dorado. Man, this is worse than blonde, brunette or redhead!

I will say one of my favorites is Open Range, with Robert Duvall, Kevin Costner and Annette Bening. The final shootout in that film is superb, filmed in wide shots in real time. If you’ve never watched it, give it a shot.

Of any actor who I thought truly portrayed the gruff loner facing the open prairie of the Old West, my $$$ goes on post-war Jimmy Stewart. He was a gangly young man with a goofy smile prior to 1941, but came back a man hardened by combat missions over Germany that translated into his acting. He made great Westerns with Anthony Mann, such as Winchester ‘73.

Surprised no one mentioned Butch and Sundance yet, or the three amigos...  :)

I’ll go 2 out of 3 lol. The first two.

I also love Pale Rider, which is like a combination of Shane/High Plains Drifter. Watching Clint dispatch Stockburn and his deputies one by one as he casually reloads his Remington 1861 by swapping loaded cylinders.

Tombstone is very entertaining (Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday is fantastic), and I’ve watched it many times. But IMHO, it’s not in the Top Ten of Westerns.

Good call. I had not thought of that.

It's a sort of western... Good movie the too soon abandoned tv series was fantastic.

I have watched every episode. I have the BluRay set, so I have actually seen them in the proper order. I agree that the series as ended too soon.  Nathan Fillion has said he would love to reboot the series at any time, but Josh Wheaton owns the rights and won't sign off.

Does Hostiles count as a Western? Could make an argument either way but if we’re counting it that’s my favorite.

3:10 to Yuma and Outlaw Josey Wales are either tied for second or first if we don’t count Hostiles.

Yes, it’s a Western. Good film, too. Although (spoiler alert!) I don’t know why he came out of the cabin. He had good, open shots at Indians just standing there lol.
