Tombstone.  Val Kilmer was fantastic. 

Also in imho any western with the Duke is always in my top 10.

Both are real classics. Once Upon a Time in the West is superb.

I would not put all the Duke’s westerns in the Top Ten. But I’d put True Grit, The Searchers and Rio Bravo there!

High Plains Drifter (1973)

Universal Pictures High Plains Drifter, directed by Eastwood himself, recounts the tale of a mysterious nameless drifter who coasts into a small mining town. The drifter is contracted by the town to protect them from a gang of ruffians soon to be released from prison. Though he accepts the mission, he has an ulterior motive: he has come to settle an old score. High Plains Drifter has been praised for stepping outside the box of Eastwood's typical westerns, as he is not playing an antihero protagonist so much as a downright villain. It's a surprisingly dark film which also features a memorable performance from Verna Bloom.

 

 

One more vote for Tombstone. To this day if I'm at a golf course and someone is looking for a game, I'll say "I'm your huckleberry."

 

Despite my vote for Tombstone, 1A is probably The Searchers. Incredibly underrated movie.

 

I really dislike current movie editing with cuts every few seconds ...sometimes less.  With that in mind, I settled in to watch an old Sergio-Clint western not too long ago...not sure which, maybe Good, Bad Ugly...not sure....but after what seemed like 20 minutes without a word or even a camera shift other than slow pans, I couldn't take it any more.  I don't have the patience anymore.  If flipping channels, I will stop on Rio Bravo or Rooster Cogburn.

McClintock or Seven brides for Seven Brothers mentioning for fun. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. for number one.

I get it!  I always consider The Good, The Bad and The Ugly to be one of my all-time favorites but, when I watch it these days, it   d....r....a....g....s   along slowly; way more than I remember.  Once Upon a Time In The West also does but to a lesser extent, I think.  Still love 'em.

How about a western with a twist... not a movie but a series of six vignettes that get progressively darker.  Done like only the Coen Brothers do...   The Ballad of Buster Scrugs.

 

When I mention this movie to friends, it seems like none of them have heard of it, let alone seen it.  According to the Wikipedia entry, it earned a bunch of awards:

The film premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2018, where it won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay. After a limited theatrical run beginning on November 9, 2018, it was released on Netflix on November 16. The National Board of Review named it as one of its top ten best films of 2018. The film earned three nominations at the 91st Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design and Best Original Song ("When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings").

Tombstone was recently rated #1 , on a thread. I think it was very well made but I personally didn’t enjoy it that much. I think it was because I primarily enjoy westerns that take place outside of the cities. Tombstone took place in a town for the most part…

I grew up watching the Magnificent Seven with my dad so I will always remember that one as an all time favorite. 

I do love Tombstone though, Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn are great. 

A few obscure ones have been mentioned. Here is a real obscure one that is really good. Dead Man starring Johnny Depp. Black and white. Figure I kind of put Depp down in the Jeff Beck thread, might as well give em some kudos in this thread.
