I don’t think they’re too hard to trap but what you do with it them might be the bigger question. 

221 Fireball is made for such critters and that the stick I'd use.

I think @clayton86 may recommend 40 grains of .223 at 3300 fps…

Yep groundhog. Shooting it is a lot easier than trapping it. For trapping I recommend a conibear rather than a live trap. 

Groundhog. They kept me and the 17 hmr busy the last 2 years. They love making basements under all the out buildings.

Both my .223/556 aren’t hunting rifles I prefer 62gr varmint grenades out of the .243 around 3800fps

Never been to cali but sure looks like a groundhog. Don’t know if they exist out west . If not it’s something similar like marmot, prairie dog, pocket gopher, etc. Groundhog will walk into a trap eventually if you keep fresh sliced apples in there every couple days. But like others have suggested if you can take a pic you can take a shot 😂. Not sure if that’s an option where you live, scatter gun doesn’t go far but the neighbors will hear it . Some would be thrilled some would call the law

I just looked it up.  They have groundhogs, but they call them the "California Woodchuck" because everything is special there.

Where I work they regularly succumb to lead poisoning.  

Whatever it is, it’s digging and you want to get rid of it as soon as possible before it does some damage. A high powered airgun should be able to take it out. A lot quieter than a firearm

I could fix that Groundhog with this from your back deck while you're napping on the couch with the windows open and not wake you. 

Well I’ve napped next to train tracks so I don’t count 😂

except silencers are illegal in California. Same as NJ where I am. I used to have them in the UK and most of my guns are threaded for them. I gave them away when I left.

at that range I’d just use my bow. If you can get a picture like that you can shoot it with a bow.
