What’s your preferred set up for the typical 3.5 inch (approx 1/2 ounce) scat bait?  

 

I think the rod has to be the right action for poop lures. It has to load/cast relatively heavy/compact lures right - but also sensitive enough for bottom contact, detecting slack line bites, etc. 

 

Preferred line too? 
 

 

I have nrx893 for 3.5" and 4.25" yamatanukis launches them. Oh line is 14# fireline as of now.

Is this a serious question?

 

What rod for a poop bait…

I have been using an NRX893 for those type of baits and it has worked out really good.

Always been curious about the 893… besides scat lures, how does it do dragging 1/2 oz football jigs or is 3/8 it’s top end?

I'm sure Im 1 of very few not blown away by NRX. It's very sensitive just not like what was expecting. I bought this rod for fat ikas but the rod doesn't load well at all with their weight right around 3/8th so pretty disappointed. Now with the heavier tanukis they load  the tip better for better casting. I don't throw jigs at all so no input there. Another use is 1/4 Swimbait Head with 3.8" paddletails works great with those. It's not a great rod for one handed casting either. 

I throw it on my skipping setup which I am holding try outs for at the moment.  For the last 2 trips on the water, it has been a 7'1" Phenix Feather H.

I wouldn't want to put a 1/2 oz jig on it, personally.  I think 3/8 is top end for that rod, especially with any cover.  I mostly use mine for shaky heads, senkos, and finesse jigs. 

No way is 3/8 top end on this rod.

One of my fav rods ever.   St croix nailed it with that rod for sure!

I use a spinner for poop baits. This one launches them like you’re surfcasting. Very sensitive and has power to spare to get them out of light to moderate cover:

Edge Silver Widow MBR736-1 on 15lb Tatsu.  Poop away.

Any jig rod that handles the weight.

I'd probably throw them on a crappie pole.

Just wanted to clarify, I'm not really recommending this rod. I just thought it'd go with the poop baits, being a TP-1 (toilet paper) and all.

The eye crosser if it smells as bad as it looks. 
 

Big bait rod if it’s been a couple

days.

In all seriousness, the falcon cara heavy cover jig would be my starting point. 16# sunline of your choice. It’s my standard Texas rig rod for around 1/2 oz total weight. I like the finesse jig for a 3/8 naked senko but at 1/2 oz the HCJ shines. 

Got the weight on the 3.5 and 4.2

Generally any good pitchin stick will work - as it works with any other large plastic.  I use a DX 745 C w/30 lb braid and sometimes a 15# floro leader.
