Now that my jig rod is broken and out of service. I was wondering what is the perfect length for a jig rod?  I know that everyone has their own preference. Mine was a 7’6” heavy, all opinions are welcome. 

Depends what you’re doing with it. If you’re dragging in open water, I like a 7’6. If I’m pitching docks, bushes, or scattered grass I like a 7’2 or 7’3.

It’s hard to pick a rod from a forum. Go to the store and handle a few of them. You’ll find the one that feels right

Depends on the situation. Skipping docks I like a 6’10”-7’0”, pitching cover I like a 7’2”-7’3”, open water dragging a football jig I like a 7’5”-7’6”

ARK Invoker 7'4" Mag Heavy is my favorite jig rod ever. Light, sensitive, and durable, with enough tip for pitching jigs as light as 3/8, and enough backbone to pull big fish out of gnarly cover. 

6' 10" Medium Heavy X-Fast for everything except punching.

The store is a good suggestion, but a rod can be very different when there is a reel on it and it's got a jig tied to the line. 

 

I like around 7' 4'', MH or H depending on the rod

I use a 7’ HF in shallower water, in tighter quarters, or for skipping docks. I use this for jigs up to 3/4oz. If I’m using a 1oz or above it automatically goes to the next rod.

 

I use a 7’3”HF that can throw a little more weight when I’m in deeper water or using heavier jigs. 
 

This isn’t really dependent on cover. The 7’ HF has more than enough muscle to work thick cover 

 

I could get away with only using one of these rods for all jig fishing, but since I have the option I’m going to use both for different situations.

Agree 100%. 

7' for everything. 

 

I find that if I keep all of my rods the same length, it improves casting accuracy.  It can be any length you want.  I just find 7' rods are easy to source.  And it's a good compromise between portability, control, leverage, and casting distance. 

 

Of course, not everyone feels the same way.  I'm sure plenty of people aren't bothered by using a bunch of different rod lengths. 

If you are an angler who likes to face shore cover and make short flipping or pitching casts the longer jig rod has advantages.

If you are like me that likes to make longer 40-50 yd horizontal cast you would think a long rod would help but my favorite jig rod length is 6’10” because that what I used for over 40 years. 6’10” was longer back in the day then standard 6’6” jig rods and any longer the rod tips got in the if the TM mount and cables. My custom jigs were both 5 and 6 power fast action, worked for me.

Loomis GLX 895 FP it’s actually an xtra heavy. Line rated 20-25
a distance 2nd is a Daiwa Zillion MH/regular it’s a 7’3” the regular bend it is a little too soft for my jigs but works well enough for Trig soft plastics and even squarebills 

 

then for light stuff it’s a GLX 892JWR

 

I have and fish lots of 7'6-7'9 rods, but really prefer 6'6-7'2 rods for working jigs and worms.

I really appreciate all the responses to my question. I have always thought that a 7’6” heavy rod is what I needed for using a jig. I now have something to think about now that is for sure. 

I don't throw huge jigs, and utilize medium to medium heavy rods. They work just fine. And are a little lighter (helps with the old wrists). 

 

All my rods are 7 foot or less...that's all that will fit in my boat : ) 

 

I do really like 6'6" rods...but my jig rods are 7'
