Favorite Buzzbait

Featured Replies

what is your favorite buzzbait? Trailer (which one) or skirt?

My favorite commercial buzzbait is the Original Lunker Lure. 1/2 oz with a skirt , 3/8th oz with a swimbait ;

I like a swim bait with the 3/8th oz for the extra weight . I cast it better on a 7" mh rod. The 1/2 oz I just use a skirt. The swim bait makes the bait to heavy causing errant cast.

This year I'm trying Strike King buzzbaits.

Cavitron

They make one with holes in the blades that lets you fish it at a slower pace.

I was a big sugar buzz guy and still am. The accent wheeler buzzbait is a good one also, especially the smaller finesse one. Then my dad makes some up that he’s given me in a light bait which are nice.

regardless of the bait, tuning and customizing are the first think I do. Wire tie the R bend line tie, scuff and flatten the blade where it hits the rivet, and pinch down the rivet.

trailers- I’ve been using a spunk shad lately.  A split tail is great but I only use black and zoom split tails in black are hard to come by. A glued on spunk shad adds a little more weight and something for the bass to suck in.

Teckell Max Squeaker.

These are allegedly pre-tuned to squeak.

Do you find that to be the case?

Sort of. It has a piece of metal in the blade that causes a squeak when it retrieved. It also clacks a ball that is on top of the head. It's a pretty cool system.

The loudest and squeakiest is the Master Blaster from Raid. You would think the thing is rusted. The wire is worn down in such a way that it causes the noise. It too is a great one. I caught around a 25lb catfish on it not too long ago.

Nichols Impulse which they discontinued and I am not thrilled.

I like long arm buzzbaits with a really sturdy wire and those just aren't common.

I don't put much stock in buzzbait preference. To me a buzzbait is a buzzbait is a buzzbait. That being said I believe the trailer is far more important and I only use two. Either a zoom super fluke or a Bizzbaits pad daddy. I do not use skirts on my buzzbaits.

Tackle Warehouse,  The Hook Up Tackle and Tackle Bros. have them.

There is a down side to this one and most of the buzzbaits I like.... light wire. For whatever reason, the most successful buzzbaits for me always seem to have this lighter wire that bends. Anytime I fish one, I keep a specific pair of Rapala pliers on me so I can bend them back.

Accent Jacob Wheeler Finesse with the Cavitron blade would be my ultimate buzzbait.

The og squeaky dolphin was my favorite, but it was also the favorite of pike...which is why I don't have any left...or OG ri vixens for that matter.

My favorite cheapo is the northland tackle buzzbaits.  Slight mods for squeaking and a trailer hook they are good to go.  https://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/northland-fishing-tackle-buzzard-buzzer-classic-series-jig/0000101826675

I like cavitrons and lunker lures too, but the lunker lure is similar to the northland tackle, imo.

I use 1/2 oz Cavitrons with just the skirt they come with now.   I have experimented with different trailers with the skirt, and without, and keep going back to a plain skirt.  I once had a Lunker Lure that came in a used Lot. of lures I bought off of E bay.  That bait made a squeak so loud every coyote for miles would come running to the lake looking for a meal. I have never had a buzz bait since, that was that high pitch and loud.  I caught many big bass on that used Lunker Lure.  I don't know why the bass liked that sound, but it by far out performed any buzz bait I have ever used.  It was a sad day, when a DD bit it right next to a fence post, and wrapped my line around the barbed wire.  I was more upset at loosing the lure than the giant bass.  I always wonder if the original owner new what a special bait he had.  I guess he didn't or it wouldn't have been for sale in a box with a bunch of old Rattle Traps and Rapala minnows.

If I ever hear a buzz bait make that sound again, I will buy every one I can get my hands on.

KVD Toad Buzz with a ham bone colored horny toad is the ol faithful for me. My only knock is that the hook seems to rust quicker than most and there's no different blade options.  I'm experimenting with some Brazalo, G Buzz, and MegaBass baits this year.

D&M Buzzsaw in-line buzzbait. The free-swinging EWG hook lets you add your favorite trailer and not worry about snagging it in any cover.
