What is your most successful lipless crankbait, (size , color, etc.)

Featured Replies

I always return to the OG 1/2oz RatLtrap,(chrome, blue back), but I have been branching out. The Berkley Warpig, RES, Lucky craft LV500 and the Yo-Zuri rattlin vibe in 1/2 oz in shad patterns have all been somewhat solid. What lipless do you tie on first?

Not OG Rat-L-Trap but a knock off from Janns Netcraft with the same shape. Man, does that thing catch. I’ve had it for quite a while and I know pumpkinseed is the color, almost positive it’s 1/2 oz. #4 mosquito (again, almost positive) hook on the belly and #6 rear.

EDIT

Mosquito hook is wrong, I don’t remember the brand. Sizes are right

I love the rat'l traps too, but this one is a solid lure, not hollow, and its called a wobbler. No brand name. I get them in bulk from ebay for around $21.50 for 10 of them in all colors.

This blue one for some reason just tears them up here in Florida. Its about 2.5" long. The bass has worn the paint off of. There have been days where the only fish caught was on this lure. It has a smooth wobble to it. Nice and tight. Runs nicely just off the bottom. Has a nice running frequency to it.

When I see schoolies busting up,this one is a quick grab and the bass slam it. I just ordered up some more.

Lipless is one of my favorite lures too. Which one I use depends on the situation. On bright, sunny day I either reach for a chrome original rat l trap, or a silver yo-zuri rattling vibe. On cloudy days I want a chartreuse H2Ox (academy house brand), or Azuma shaker z (not Azuma anymore since someone bought them out). Those two seem almost the same to me. In grassy prespawn areas I’m reaching for a Rayburn red Booyah hard knocker first. Then it’s a red rat l trap after that. If I want a lipless to flutter on the fall I reach for a red eye shad. It’s great at that.

Lippless baits are a lot of fun to fish, and when the bass are on them, it's fun times for all.

I like to slow-roll them and burn them over soft cover.

I use a few different baits depending on the usage.

Perhaps my favorite way to fish one is in cooler water and to present one like a blade bait.

So think clean(er) bottom and short hops.

The Duo Realis Tungsten G-Fix is my go-to.

DUO Realis Vibration 68 G-Fix Lipless Crankbait – Three Rivers Tackle

It's a 3/4 oz bait but has a 1/2 oz profile and is very thin side to side.

Great way to cover water and get latched on to late-season brown bass.

I’ve fished them off and on for 15 years but never stuck with them and found any success. This year im going at it though. Got a chrome and blue 1/4 ounce rattle trap and a chartreuse and black rapala rip n rap in 5/16 ounce. Hope to catch some once fishing starts up consistently here. I’m also dabbling in bladed mishear this year. As less of a scum catcher compared to treble hooks. Wana get on that cold water reaction bite.

Any color of the Lucky Craft LV500. Another would be the original Xcalibur One Knocker. Honorable mention, Jackall TN60 in Ghost Minnow.

Xcalibur one knock> than any other. Not had much luck on Booyah replacement or similar Yo Zuri lures. Lucky Craft, SK, and Rapala's will catch some but not as often.

Shallow water steady retrieve its a smaller rattle trap (1/4 or 1/2). Just a little deeper, burning it fast, or yoyoing it’s a 1/2 oz red eye shad. Color for conditions and lake, but chartreuse black back, chrome blue or black, sexy shad, and red/orange craw.

Throw more jerkbaits and crankbaits than lipless but jackal tn70 or LC LV500. Ghost Minnow and craw colors.

The 1/2 oz Red Eye Shad. Yo-yoed off the bottom on points. I use the rattling, one knocker and silent versions. When fishing in an aluminum jon boat, I can hear the hits when using the rattling lure.Shad colors, chartreuse and chrome. If they are choking on it then I have the right combination. If they are barely hooked, slashing at it , or I can hear hits but not feel them, then I'll start changing things. Color , sound , aggresiveness of hops, to try to get them to take it better.

Discontinued Kinami Rad Shad 5/8oz is my best. Second place tie between Team Daiwa and Original Rattle trap in 1/2oz. Lighter baits just don't work for me.

I have a bunch of Rat l Traps and Mini traps I need to use more, but my buddy has had a lot of success with the Strike King Red Eyed shad, it has a wobble to it on the fall so probably best used with and up and down or stop and go retrieve. But Rat l Traps are hand painted and made in USA

1/2 oz chrome and blue original Bill Lewis Rattletrap. I bought an LV 500 to use for deeper water lift and fall retrieves, but am always scared I will lose it so I haven't fished it much yet. When I have fished it with a straight retrieve in shallow water the original Rattletrap gets hit 4 to one over the expensive LV 500. I didn't buy it for straight retrieves, and I hope to give it a fair chance when I fish ledges and humps this spring.

The original Rattletrap always gets bit. If the fishing is slow I fish the bank with the trap and I know I will catch bass. They may not be big, but I will catch them. Many times while moving from one place to the next I will troll a Rattletrap in open water well off the bottom, with no structure around and get bit. The Original Rattletrap flat out catches bass.

Okay, definitely using the traps more this year

Yea Buddy.

I was waiting a couple of years to go full on about this one but.......

Both sizes are just a little scarey.

In a good way.

Btw, has anyone figured out why bass eat shrimp ?

My go to is a 6th sense snatch 75. I really liked the FRS -faint rattle system and the silent but they discontinued them. It may have been from QC issues as I had problems either them early on.

I use the 5/8 oz in a crawfish color in early spring. After further inspection on TW and 6th sense website, It looks like a lot of the colors have gone away.

Maybe it’s no longer cool. I like them and I’ve caught some good largemouth on them.

Everything loves to eat shrimp. Just made some salted garlic shrimp for my bluegill bait this year. Ive read that a large part of a male crappie diet around the spawn will consist of malacostrocans, think I spelled that right. Could be the same with bass, not sure if they prefer freshwater shrimp at certain times of year, but have read that bass in tidal areas will develop a taste for saltwater shrimp. Pro Cure makes a freshwater shrimp gel I believe

The old school rattlin rap. This one and the one they discontinued with the orange craw shad pattern.

1/2 oz or 3/4 oz (depending on current and wind conditions) original Rattle Trap in either chrome (clear or lightly stained water) or gold (stained or muddy water). I have tried many brands and colors, but those two have turned out to be my most consistent producers. My second choices (a tie) are orange and San Rayburn Red. That said, just about any brand and color lipless crankbait will work in just about any situation. The only bad news about these colors is that they also seem to be magnets for pike and musky. BTW, the 1/4 oz or smaller work great for panfish, crappie, and in my experience, even trout in certain situations.

I have close to 100 lipless cranks in my boxes currently. The ones I reach for most these days are the 1/2 oz Booyah One Knocker (Copper Shiner was responsible for my largest lipless fish at just over 9lb) and the 3/4 oz Thunderhawk Sergeant (Biggest on that one a bit over 8lb). Honorable mentions to the 1/2 oz Red-Eye Shad and the 1/2 oz Rattlin' Rapala. Colors between them tend to be the same. Shad, bluegill, gold are the staples.
