@bulldog1935 I should have been more specific in that, as I meant the guessing on the year of the photo 😬

Well it happened! After a mere five month wait (including two weeks “lost in shipping”) my Edge rods have arrived. And I must say they are spectacular! Beautifully constructed, extremely light and total comfort in hand. I wasn’t sure if I would like the carbon over cork but man,,,I love it.

I have had two Curado MGL’s and one Vanford sitting in wait for the rods.

The light/medium/heavy will get spooled with Smackdown 20#

The MH Moderate with 30# Smackdown

The Vanford spinning with 15# Smackdown and accordingly required leader.

These are my favorite set ups by far, as long as they have the correct cast ability and sensitivity. That’s saying a lot as they are replacing GLoomis IMX and GLX rods and ‘ole greenie Curado reels. The weight difference between rigs is amazing so hoping the new outfits stand up to their predecessors.

Stepping outside the Shimano box my Diawa Tatula/ Procyon spinning rig will complete my canoe fall setup.

Chomping at the bit to get them on the water!

Agree. The reels on the left are second generation Ambassadors. One reel on right side looks like a Daiwa

Mind if I ask how long had you waited for them? I know @Motoboss had waited for 5 months, and I am currently on month #4.

Hang in there, looks like they’re getting caught up.

A Bantam Bass One Mag I recently cleaned and oiled up. I’m gonna put some line and test it out - inherited it from my grandpa

Cool old reel!

Looks like you are missing 4 parts there!

Photo shows its missing it's cast control cap and other parts:

BNT 802 Spool tension spacer (B)

BNT 803 Spool tension spacer (A)

BNT 804 Spool tension spring

Here's a box for it:

And since parts are no longer available for that reel, you may have to purchase a second reel for parts. I found one under $30 to your door:

Fish these yet?

The grips "concern" me, what are they like if they get a little wet?

  • Super User

I haven’t had the opportunity to fish these three but I have a several others I’ve been fishing from one to three years and I like them.  They have a tight weave and comfortable texture that is not slick. Very low to no maintenance: take a wet terry cloth and wipe them off.  My primary Flippin stick is a first strike and that told me these are comfortable.

You will like the carbon grips.  They aren't slippery and clean up easily.

@KP Duty - I still put a band of X-shrink at the front of the butt on this PureLure rod for 2-hand cast follow-through (the forward X-shrink is because I didn't like the EVA quality)

fwiw, this is the only China rod that has impressed me - reviews compare its 4-axis blank to Poison Adrena, and in April, it was hooking fish at 180'.

😍 Is that a 5000D?

  • Super User

@Big Hands - Hi friend, 5000D modified with full Avail alloy/BB LW, Avail 5-mm spool, mag brake, and GoldWorks skeleton spool bushings.  I'm targeting mid-weight cranks, and was able to set the mag brake throwing 1/8 oz.

I also had to get creative on the bait-feed clicker, and drill a hole in the side plate to swap C3 feed-clicker for the stock feed-clicker that wouldn't allow Avail mag brake.

It's a fun reel, while the clutch works as normal Ambassadeur, the mainshaft stack functions as direct drive, turning the crank backwards with drag pay.  Alloy frame, it's also the lightest mid-frame Ambassadeur I own.

Sold a Flippin rod so I grabbed an Edge EFX Pro 766C .  Note the lock nut on this series.  Tighten it and it stays tight.

Not that it matters much, but I was surprised by how well the color scheme of my Abu reel matches the Abu Regista 6'10 ML rod.  With some fresh mono, this is a great combo for light topwater/jerkbait smallie fishing.

I have several First Strike series rods and a couple Black Widows from 2015.  Back then, Tackle Warehouse carried two Edge models, the First Strike @ $400 and the Black Widow @ $500.  Only carbon gripped rods TW  carried at that time, and I wanted one bad.  Later that year, TFO was closing out their Edge rods for 50% off, so I bought 5 FS's and 2 BW's.  Even Sierra Trading got some clearance Edge rods, and I added the 806 crankbait rod.  Still love them.  Wish they still made the rod covers- they are the nicest I've owned.
