Panther Martin and rooster tails...also a few by "Joe's flies". They are really well made and bass like them well enough, they are on the lighter side though, most of them are around 1/4

I kid you not: I haven't used a Panther Martin or Rooster Tail for more than 50 years. What colors do you like?

Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

  • So I went fishing today, and caught a 9#. Scale bounced between 8-15 and 9-2, but let's call it a 9, shall we? NLMB trout eater.   Super slow rolling a 8" weedless on the bottom in about 15

I have a whole bunch of Mepps, Panther Martin, Rooster Tail & Blue Fox spinners, quite a few of which I have had for many years.  I don't use them very often these days because they're not as suitable for a lot of the places I fish where i live now, but they still come out for exercise when I hit rivers and streams, for both bass and trout.

Only problem is, with open trebles and light line, they get lost easily, so you have to always buy more to keep your stock up!

I do best with them in late fall, focusing on shallow windswept points, bays and flats where the white bass also congregate, feeding on shad. The two seem to intermix for the same reason.

The waters i fish are pretty dark so anything dark like blue, black, purple works well. White also does pretty well. lots of gold and silver for flash. Colors like red, yellow, orange, chartreuse don't really do well in the areas I fish. I have some Panther Martin's that have special UV paint that lights up well in low light conditions

My son lights it up with those blue fox spinners.  He got that exact box from a kid in his class (just shows how much he loves fishing) who came to his birthday party and he's only used one and caught like 20 fish of 5 different species on it.

Speaking of my son, he's been having a hard time with the transition bass and I got him some chicken liver because I wanted blackened catfish for dinner and he got two PBs the last couple nights with a 6 lber in there.

Gonna be yummy in my tummy tonight.

There's a pond I fish that's about 50/50 smallmouth/largemouth. When I'm traveling across the pond, I like to troll a Mepps. It only takes a couple minutes for a smallie to hit it. They love it as much as Ontario smallmouth. I also caught a four-pound lmb on it last summer while trolling.

Pat, please give your son an "attaboy" from the BR crew.

Another great evening , thrown together last minute of course. My buddy said he had to be done by 6pm, we started around 4. Josh gets a 21” SMB, then Bobby gets a 22” SMB!!! Wild. I got a few dinks and lost a good one maybe 18” + . Wasn’t even planning on getting the boat out, glad we did! large.IMG_5322.jpeglarge.IMG_3236.jpeglarge.IMG_3230.jpeglarge.IMG_3231.jpeglarge.IMG_3241.jpeg

That's a really great day. Two Bucks, and Eagle, and gobs of big bass! Were you cranking shallow of deep? I'm going Sunday and may need to break out the cranks.

Never caught anything deeper than 4ft and those fish were suspended in laydowns.  Most were on the bellies in the dirt.  Most important thing was fishing the wind.  Windblown banks they were stacked up waiting for the baitfish to get blown to them.  Good luck!

@TnRiver46: Less is more if the 21-incher is the first bass, for it's a chunk and a half.

Caught 6 bookends in 7 hrs today at my close to home lake. Started fast and keep slowing down until I caught one on a finesse jig and 5 on a wobblehead Ned.  Had a great Sun rise and wonderfully colored up trees.

Played around for about 2.5 hours Thu. chasing bass, but the active fish were really scattered and the bite slow. Picked up 4 small keepers before throwing in the towel and chasing crappie - lol. Hope to be back at it Mon or Tues. Hoping the 3-day front (cooler, cloudy and light rain) might stir things up.

I caught 10 today in the cold rain all between 14 and 17 inches.   9 spots and one LM.  LM was my last of the day, on my last cast.   I had something to do today at noon so I only fished from 7 until a little after 10.   The bass were back shallow on flats and shallow points hanging at stumps.   Most were on a shakey head.  Lake is still down, about the same.  Rain is just a drizzle so won't help water levels much.   Water temp is 63.  I don't remember what it was last week.  Hopefully I posted it in this thread.

They're still eating at least at one pond. I caught this chunky girl on a 1/16oz Ned Rig with a Megabass P5 Criffhanger and a Daiwa Millionaire CT with #08 PE line and 8lb leader.

Looking for redemption tonight past dark and I actually just fished out a jig from my box 5 minutes ago that looks a lot like @Pat Brown's.

@Pat Brown: Gorgeous bass, Pat.

What a mouth on your bass, @FishTank!

I got some great news this yesterday morning. I had some blood work done on Thursday and my doctor called to say that I'm quite anemic, which explains why my energy has been so low. I remember rolling my canoe for thirty yards across a flat field this summer and panting. I also remember staggering out of my canoe after a few hours of fishing. The fix is an iron supplement and in three weeks to three months, I'm supposed to regain my energy. I know my iron level isn't exactly about catching bass, but it sorta is.

I'm glad you've got some answers and I hope you feel better closer to that 3 week mark rather than 3 months

In-line spinner fans represent!

Oh yes. I have over 60 Mepps. And a number of Rooster Tails. When all else fails. Throw on a Mepps. Or other spinners. Fish bight them not to feed but either curiosity or a defensive bight. Not sure what it is but they want it out of their area. Who knows why? But they do bight them.

Question for you inline guys. Do you use swivels? I have but I don't see them really limiting line twists. And I think they deter bights. I will fish with one on and not get a bight. Take the swivel snap off and then get bights. And I use the smallest I can find. But on the small ones, the swivels don't seem to work well. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I use a ball-bearing swivel with my Mepps. I think they're more likely to work than the cheaper ones.

I’ve tried swivels with Mepps, where I fish they ended up being just another thing to catch weeds. If I direct tie to braid I have little if any problem with line twist on a spinning reel.

Took a trip guided trip up to Clear Lake three months in the making only to run into some really tough conditions with those Florida stain bass having locked jaw. A couple days later I got out on the delta trying to make amends. Water temps in the low 60’s, an incoming tide I wanted to see if there was still a punch bite and throw some jerkbaits.

Pulled up on a mat that had a couple of egrets working a little ways down the slough. A couple of pitches later I put a healthy green fish in the boat. Then a couple of state boat roll in directly across the slough from me and begin spraying the mats filling the air with the smell of herbicides. That’s when I bailed on this spot and went to find some jerkbait fish. And I did find some willing fish to complete a nice fall  day on the water.
