S.S. Amoeba has been sunk!

Featured Replies

I was hoping I had enough Karma points logged lately to not have someone bite me.  Looks like my year will mostly be bank fishing since someone decided to sabotage my canoe.

I take my canoe through the game lands and fish some pretty remote places - because they are so far, 2-3 miles over rough terrain I will take it back a few days before, hide it as best as possible and padlock it.  Well, someone decided to put about 20 holes in the bottom of my canoe.  Well anyway, I brought it back the other night with the intention of taking a kid fishing today...we got back there and all the brush was moved and someone axed it or something.  Needless to say we didn't fish.

It really stinks because my budget is pretty much shot for the year and this canoe was virtually unsinkable - so I enjoyed taking my kids in it.  For me it worked great because I had a trolling motor and could easily fish standing up.  I hope that person feels bad and does something good to repent.  Jeez.

In the oft chance, does anyone know if there is a way to repair aluminum canoes with a lot of 3 inch holes in it.  Attached a picture of a hole and me and the kids fishing last year.

  • Well, someone needs an ass whipping.

  • Please call local law enforcement and file a report.   You report, along with others, can help law enforcement catch the perp.

  • Get it welded. Many welders do side jobs at much reduced rates. Had a welder fabricate & weld pods on my boat for less than buying bolt on pods.

20 holes?  That shows intent.  Sorry, man.  That really stinks!

Depending on the grade of aluminum patches can be welded inside and a bead weld on the outside by someone who knows how to weld aluminum. Contact the mfr of the canoe to determine the type of aluminum they use.

Pure vandalism by someone who hates people fishing "his" private water. Be careful whoever it is has some metal issues.

Tom

PS, you teach your kids to respect the environment, clean up trash and some crazy person attacks your canoe.

I would call fabrication shops in your area and ask who welds aluminum then tell your story and see if they thinks it’s worth it. I bought a used aluminum canoe for $300 about 12 years ago and it’s in great shape.

Yeah, it was intentional, no doubt about it.  28 holes in all...

Some people get off on doing something like this, it’s really sad. They probably spent the rest of the day pulling wings off off flies.

28???? Ouch. I’d get a new boat or take up welding. New boat would be much cheaper

I would have to sell all my fishing gear.  It could be worse - I didn't have all my rods stolen this time!  Just have to hone my bank skills this year and won't be going to the river or the electric motor only places.  But I will still catch some fish!

How long is that boat? Maybe a used canoe is available in the area

Sad what people will do to someone out of jealousy!  Sorry to hear of this!

It's a 14 foot sportspal.  It has a lot of sentimental value because I have been using it for almost 30 years - my dad and I used to take it fishing and frog hunting.  Also fished my first fishing tournament in it with my friend back in 1998!  Lol

Where do you live? I know a few welders that fish that could help.

Sorry to hear! I too would file a police report, as they may be able to help. People like this have no respect for anything. Hope you can find out who did this, and get your canoe repaired also

Hard to tell the size of the holes but of the several old johnboats I've owned, I've had great luck patching small holes with this stuff.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/J-B-WELD-WaterWeld-White-Epoxy-Adhesive/3389026?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-pnt-_-google-_-lia-_--_-glue-_-3389026-_-0&store_code=721&placeholder=null&gclid=Cj0KCQjw09HzBRDrARIsAG60GP9pSZrA6KYkLXosUtK2mVsl8BRyW4-DLOzChTRnRRx1iDhwEWtnWQ4aAl0CEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Lowe's and Home Depot both carry it and it's pretty inexpensive. You'll need at least a few sticks of it for that number of holes but for what you'll pay to have that many holes welded, you could just buy another used one.

Probably the same type of person that is hoarding all of the toilet paper now.

Maybe for a quick, cheap fix try that Flex Tape or Flex Seal stuff they show on TV. You might even put a thin fiberglass or aluminum piece over the holes and then seal them on both sides with Flex Seal. The stuff may in fact be junk, but for under $20 it might be worth a shot.

As some else posted, where the heck do you live? DB’s everywhere. That’s why I don’t leave my stuff any where.  Here in Pennsy you can leave your boat at certain state parks, not for me. It’s going home.

What is the matter with people.

You could try patching, as BlueBasser suggested.  Flatten and apply J B Weld from the inside an use screen patch material and fiberglass reinforced epoxy on the underside. It’s not readily available, but it can be sanded after curing. Maybe $50 for materials and 4-5hrs of work.  Just an idea to throw out there.

Anyone who would look at someone else’s property and intentionally set out to damage it is not all there in the head.

Growing up my Dad would verbally rip me a new one if he saw me leaning or sitting on someone else’s car. He taught me to respect other people’s property. I have done the same with my son.

This is a true shame. Especially thinking of your kids not being able to enjoy the canoe. Test whatever repair you might make before bringing them onboard.
