Since you last fished when the line on your casting rod like this:

 

 

 

I put the line through through the guides and even tied my spinnerbait on and set the reel to the lure. 
 

Then when I looked at the reel, I gave myself a mental slap with an imaginary glove. 

I did the same thing but under the reel guide one time.

 

First trip out with a brand new $150 reel and I got 10 consecutive birds nests. Locked down the brakes and solved that but I couldn’t get any distance.

 

I spent an hour very disappointed with my purchase until the mistake was caught...

The other that used to happen when I first started was lining the rod up without knowing that the line was actually underneath a coil or too. 
 

It is rare that this happens now since I watch that like a hawk but the one I did like usually happens when I am a bit hasty, lol. 

I think most of us have done something similar to that...

I did that once spooling one up. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out why all the line was all going to one side. Words were used. 

Guilty of doing the same thing.  I fished it for a few minutes before I figured it out.  That's what getting up at 3am will do to you. 

I had constant backlashes with a reel during a tournament so I put it away. Realized later on that I had missed a guide ring and threaded it through the frame 

I was stream trout fishing a few weeks ago and had to rethread line through my rod guides. Somehow missed the last three guides completely but went through the tip. Didn't realize the issue until I went to cast and retrieve. I wasn't thinking clearly 

@Delaware Valley Tackle will get a kick out of this.

 

I'd just got a Tatula SV TWS back from him that I'd bought used and needed some TLC but planned to use for spinnerbaits. Put line on it, put it on the rod, it felt awful. Wouldn't cast nearly as well as my other SV reels, retrieving my spinnerbait was difficult to say the least. I really was having to crank and it felt jerky for some reason. I tried for a few minutes and put the rod down in disappointment.

 

When I got home, I went to take the reel off the rod to put the Fuego I had been using for spinnerbaits back on the rod. That's when I realized I'd somehow managed to wrap my line around the rod blank between the reel and the first line guide when I was threading the line and didn't even notice it, not only when I did it, but also when I made several cast with it ? It was an after work trip so maybe I was a little tired and half cross-eyed, but I still couldn't believe I'd done that and not noticed.

Yup, been there done that as well as other absent minded things.

Only every time I respool..literally every time 

Brain fart. I'm guilty.

Happened to me within the last 2 weeks

I've messed up like this on both casting and spinning many times

 

... but it is easier to fix on a spinning reel.... when nobody is looking.

i don’t feel so stupid now

Glad i wasn’t to blame.  Lol

All you did was forget to put the line though the level wind?  I have forgot to even bring a rod and reel before, turning an epic fishing trip in to scenic drive.

I’ve done worse than that or at least equivalent so I know all about that scenic drive, lol. I’ve forgotten my license a few times and I don’t take a chance fishing without it. Not worth it. 

OMG. I've never done such . Well there's no pics/videos of me doing such. So no proof.

One time after I had just put new line on I walked from the living room, down the stairs into the basement, and out into the garage. When I set the rod down I realized that I had a free spool.  I had a huge backlash, and about 50 feet of line strung out through the house.

Never Ever go with out your license... I went out fishing with a friend on our kickboats and was having a good day when the Ranger pulled his boat up next to us to look at our hard sided kickboats.  He started asking questions like where did youget them etc.  Before he left he said "I ought to check your licenses".  My buddy had his and I had my old one. I had taken the wrong one (I never save them anymore).  He gave me a citation with a big smile and said thanks for the info on the boat.  

I had to go to court twice, once for the arraignment to set the trial date (one day off from work) and one more day off for the trial.  I met with the Asst DA and showed them my current license that I had left at home and they dismissed the citation.  I could have been out fishing those days rather than sitting around a courthouse for the better part of the day.  

I learned my lesson now it is in the tackle bag in a nice plastic baggie...Just hope I don't forget my tackle bag now!

I keep my fishing license in my wallet - never go anywhere without that - for times I shore fish without my tackle bag.

My canoe registration is in the plastic pocket of my tackle bag - tackle bag is always in the canoe.

Its a good idea to take pictures of your license and boat registration on your phone.
