The white bass tacos thread got me thinking...who here eats ray oysters in the half shell?  People love those things.  They eat em by the plate full.  Slurp em down by the dozen.

My brother loves them.  I won't touch em.

Cooler water ones are great

They need to be super fresh but I've wiped out a few raw bars all on my own.

I've eaten hundreds in my youth.  I pass on them now.  It is probably a coincidence,  but I think the last time I had them wasn't too long before I quit drinking.

I'm happy to partake, but I also know folks who ended up with intestinal distress or hepatitis. Clean, cool water is the key. Eating any raw/undercooked/poorly handled meat or fish carries some risk.

You gotta be where they're harvested. So good though when fresh, same for a lot of other raw seafood.

We had a rule that we only ate them in months that had an R.

Yup, the ones from the Eastern shore are good. The Ches. Bay is such a cesspool, I won't eat those.

Love ‘em.

My father and I can polish off our fair share, that’s for sure.

Steamers, lobsters, quahogs don’t have a chance either. :)

Love em! From oyster shots in Annapolis, to the gourmet selection at the King Street Oyster bar in Middleburg and Old Ebbit grill in DC, I will order a dozen.  I got hooked when I lived in Massachusetts and I could buy them by the gunnysacks off the pier.  I also got hooked on fresh mussels.  My house in Massachusetts had a shell pile out back when we bought it.  I soon found out why.

Not just raw oysters - don't let me near the sushi/sashimi bar...I'll wipe them out.

Oysters are about the only seafood I don't like..raw or cooked. A texture thing for me...kind of a slimy bag of sand. Flavor wise I like them.

My wife calls them slimy boogers in a half shell.

Oysters raw or prepared in any edible fashion has been a favorite of mine my entire life.

Every Christmas my family ( large ) downs a bushel of oysters.

We simply throw them on the grill until they open, a dash of Texas Pete.......slurp.

Try 'em in a shot glass topped with vodka and tobasco.

If you want to take a trip to Cape Cod, the Welfleet Oysterfest is in OctotbeR.

How hungry was the first man who pulled them from  salty muddy water and decided to crack open and eat?

I wonder if it was the same guy who picked a jalapeno pepper and ate it raw.

Umm...

i love them.  i am lucky to live in Northern CA, where they are abundant.  i do realize it has a Russian Roulette feel to them.  one bad oyster and you are effed.  hahah..i wont eat them if my spidey senses go off.  for that, i found it was best to learn how to shuck them myself.

The best raw oysters I ever ate were in New Orleans.  I quite eating them when I turned 60.  Oysters feed by filtering water and harmful germs can concentrate in their tissues. When someone eats raw or undercooked oysters, germs that might be in the oyster can cause illness. CDC estimates that about 80,000 people get vibriosis—and 100 people die from it—in the United States every year.  I have enough things to worry about.

I've had vibrio, it sucks.
