Watch the entire video before you post. I think he has some very valid points. We must all do what we can to help prevent this. We must all make a extreme effort to do the least damage possible.

 

 

 

 

I can appreciate PSAs like these. But this concept definitely isn’t exclusive to the Ned rig. The Ned’s small size makes it that much quicker for a bass to swallow, but really any soft plastic runs this risk if the angler isn’t fully engaged. The smaller the bait, the faster on the draw the angler needs to be. 

I've set my ex-wife up with a Ned Rig. All four of my kids have fished a Ned Rig. I've set my fiance up with a Ned Rig. I've gotten half a dozen friends into fishing a Ned Rig. I've caught thousands of bass on a Ned Rig. I've never seen a fish swallow a Ned Rig, not one time. However, I've had several instances of my kids, their mom, my fiance, and friends who have let bass swallow Senkos and Trick Worms that I have had to deal with.

I’ve never had one swallow it. I don’t fish it a lot anymore though either. My experience is the same as yours though, they tend to swallow other plastics on rare occasion.

 

The other part of the video I thought was interesting is that a 12 inch smallmouth is 8 years old in the north?! That’s not what I was told by a biologist here in MN. I was told in person that a 20 inch/5 pound bass is about 10 years old. That doesn’t fall in line with what this guy is saying.

I've seen it a lot with senkos. I think the main idea is to do as much to not hurt the fish as you possibly can. Try to set the hook as soon as possible and be as carefully as you can removing it. If I have to I cut the hook with a cutting pliers. Better to leave a small section in than rip out their guts.

I'm not interested in anything Dudley has to say about anything. I do get a chuckle out of his childish tantrums though. Somebody had to fill Ike's shoes I guess...

 I've never had a fish swallow a ned either. I have had the occasional bass swallow a Senko though. I release those to the grease and serve 'em with coleslaw and hush puppies.

 

Edit to add: I wonder how many bass Dudley has killed hauling them around in his livewell all day?

Basically, they're balls of deep fried cornbread. I put fresh diced Jalepenos in mine. Mmmm Good!!!

 

The same could be said about bass swallowing tubes, grubs, or almost any smaller plastic.

When I hook a bass on a Ned they usually spit . Lost five in a row the other day .

This has been my experience as well. I've caught tons of bass on senkos and tons on neds. Had many gut hooked bass on senkos over the years...zero on Ned rig.

I think he should have stopped at, “They’re rough stats. They’re not accurate. They’re just an assumption of what’s going on,” IMO . Been throwing it hard for 10 years - very few have ever swallowed it - maybe 2-3 every year.

Thats all some pretty "fuzzy" math.

Thats assuming that everyone is throwing a Ned...and everyone is gonna catch 30 (and 2 will die).

Thats a lot of speculation.

Totally agree, that is a very inaccurate assumption. 1-2 every 30 bass on each 150 boat, 5 days period. I don’t think he was even one of those boat to keep the stat.

Of course any lure have a chance to be deep hook, the more it catches fish the more chance it gets. Of course we cannot proof that gutted hook would survive after released. Anyone listen to this “I don’t know who” guys, never fish Ned Rig.

 

 

One of the key signs of someone who probably doesn't know what they're talking about on a specific topic or they're just guessing is when they start saying things like "I know people are going to tell me that's not true" or "I know people are going to say I've never had that happen" etc etc. They start by making everyone else a contrarian before they say something idiotic. That's what he did. Right out of the Randy Blaukat playbook.

Most all of my ned "deep hooks" are in the roof of the mouth. Hemostats make removal easy. Most of the time when they're deeper than lip hooks just a well angled push and you feel a slight pop. Simple outpatient surgery.

I have never had a Bass swallow a Ned rigged bait I have thrown.
 

I can see this happening with any bait that is supposed to be fished on a semi slack line. If the wind puts too much bow in your line fish a different bait to avoid gut hooking a Bass.

Had plenty hork down stick baits, t-rigs, and swimbaits.

     I have never had a bass swallow a Ned rig.  I have never fished a Ned rig, which I assume is the reason it hasn't happened. I have gut hooked bass on every lure I have fished for them with.  It is rare, but does happen.  I don't get to worried about it.  Most of the fish I catch, the worst thing that happens is the bass has to admit to their friends and family, that they were dumb enough to get hooked by me.  Some may lie, and say they were caught by KVD I don't know.  If they are not going to survive I eat them.  Simple as that.

Idk, haven't fished Ned this year yet but can't argue that small baits increase deep hooks.

 

Wind has caused more issues than small hooks by eliminating sensitivity. My last fish demise was with a weightless Senko in high wind........ couldn't feel the bite, hated that.

I think it’s safe to say that your opinion is probably more valued on this subject than anyone’s, including Dudley’s. After all, you did set a record using one. How many during that record swallowed it to the point where you thought they were going to die?

I fish ned rigs a LOT.  As in a LOT.  I've never had a bass swallow it.

 

95% of them get hooked right at the top front of the mouth.  The majority of the others are corner hooks.

 

The worst culprit for inhaled hooks for me has always been soft swim baits like keitechs.
