BACKING ON BAITCASTING REEL

Featured Replies

Do you put any backing line when using braid line on a baitcaster.?

always with braid.  It will slip around the spool if you don't have backing on it.

Also, it takes up a lot less space on the spool.  No sense spooling 150 yards of braid on to fill a spool.  75 is plenty so fill the rest with cheap mono.

The only time I don't is using 65lb braid on my frog rod. Otherwise I have some dirt cheap 12lb mono from walmart I use.

Yes, cheap Berkeley Vanish as backing on casting and spinning gear.

10 - 12lb Berkley Big game and fill about a third to half the spool depending on how heavy of braid your using.

10# Berkley Big Game on the casting reels - no matter if my main-line is 10# InvizX or 50# 832.

I always use backing for braid. I use some cheap, high viz co-polymer or mono from Cabelas (although other places have it too). That way, when the braid gets low, you can start to see the bright line at the end of a long cast coming through and helps gauge how soon you need to add more braid.

I think I bought a 600 yard spool of the cheap stuff for like $5 bucks.

sometimes.  my friends at this fishing store could do a cool knot that didnt slip.  i paid a bit more, but whatever.  i cannot reverse engineer their knot.

DIY?  i use some trilene mono.    it is the smarter move.

my friend uses Lews reels.  he is straight braid.  he doesnt even knot it anymore.  he just stuffs and end thru the wiffle holes and starts cranking.  hahha.

Only thing I dont use backing for is mono. Everything else gets big game backing from 10-12lbs, whatever I have most of at the time.

That's my spinning reels - Zebco Cajun - that bright red really shines through - and at $6.50 for 1500+ yds at Fleet Farm...a bargain

If it’s loud, gaudy, and cheap - it works!

On one of my mh rods I use backing to minimize amount of braided line used, not necessarily to prevent slipping. To maintain the lightest possible spool weight on my two bfs setups I do without backing, three wraps around the spool finished with an arbor knot won't slip with braided line. You could also put a tiny strip of electrical tape on the spool if you're worried about slippage.

I personally don't

I use it with braid and fc. I use tatsu fc which is expensive so using backing makes the 1000yd spool last a lot longer.

I usually just do a few wraps of big game mono. Really, maybe about 10 yds. I don’t mind filling a spool with braid because I don’t feel like I change line often enough to justify the cost savings. I usually get the 300yd spools of 832 and I can get about 4 ish spools out of one. I usually re-spool once a year regardless (more often if I have to), and I don’t use enough to justify any savings.  Sure, I could save money, but honestly, I really like the way braid feels on my thumb. I hate bombing a cast and the double uni from backing to braid slaps my thumb. Nothing wrong at all, just makes me mad I suppose!

Oh, and I tie a double arbor for the backing to spool. Not sure if anyone cares or not.

Yep, whatever junk mono I have lying around.

I change my line often. I lose lures and subsequently lose line, and change lures enough to lose line. So... I always use a mono backer if I use braid. I don't use braid much for casting though.

Hadn't thought of that! Great idea! I would think the hi viz DOES show up if you start getting close.

I will have to try that!

I back all my reel, except for BFS, with whatever mono I have left over. Its varies from reel to reel but I'll put about 10-25 yards.
