Line Snippers?

Featured Replies

I have always used my knife for changing lures and such, but occasionally it would be easier for me to have cutters of some type. Is there any alternative to the Boomerang tool?

  • If its for cutting line I just use scissors.

  • I’ve got probably a dozen pairs of scissors scattered around the boat. The kids’ size Fiskars from Wally World don’t have any problem with braid.

When I go out I just attach the retractable lanyard to my nose ring. It’s very handy that way.

I gave up on the Boomerang since I first tried the Cuda.

I use the 3" micro, but they go up to an 8" model that'll handle wire.

I've been using these on the boat for a few years.

Really excellent on all lines.

I recently purchased an additional pair for the tackle room.

Umpqua Rivergrips.   I really appreciate the forceps/cutter combination.  I also have the White River version, but I prefer the Umpqua.  (You can get exact same tool on AliExpress for less)

So I have the Boomerang Tool and its just ok. I find the scissor mechanism sticks from time to time. You end having to put your lure down to fix it. Its kind of annoying.  The Cudas mentioned above are great but for braid I tend to like these scissors from Anadromous Fly Company. Super sharp.

I also use Dr. Slicks Cyclone Snippers. I keep them on retractable tether. I can access them quickly and they make braid to leader knots easy to cut.

Great for mono and FC, but even my Fiskars have problems with braid.

For most of the time, I just use nail clippers.  A 3 pack at your local major pharmacy chain should be $5 or so.  I’ll get 2-4 years before lose them or let them get rusty.  For mono and fluoro they will stay sharp forever.  And I’ll even clip braid off a hook with them when I’m cutting through the knot.  They aren’t great for cutting a clean tag end off a braid knot though so I separately keep a pair of these in the boat.  I have a second pair in the basement with my fly tying gear that are 25 years old and still as sharp as day 1.

Lots of interesting suggestions, thanks all. I do have a pair of Fiskars around here someplace.

For the most part I use Rapala tools. I’m set up decently for myself in the front of the boat. And almost as well for a guest or the grandkids in the back. Decent scissors are can be had fairly cheap. Rapala, Cuba’s and a small cuticle scissor from beauty supply are floating around on the deck at all times. Don’t overlook that small cuticle scissor, I use it a lot.

I just use fiskars scissors and have for many years now for all line applications!

Nail clippers. Everyone can find these.

No link necessary.

I use the Heigh Ten aluminum nippers.

Blades are tungsten carbide and should last forever.

I prefer scissors, but since these hang off my small fishing bag, I've poked myself several times and switched to nippers.

I also have Loon Outdoors Rogue Mitten Scissor Clamps but have been disappointed with them. They have difficulty cutting finesse or fine braid. This seems to be a problem with many scissors, even my Fiskars. They only work if I pull the line taut first.  https://loonoutdoors.com/products/rogue-mitten-scissor-clamps?srsltid=AfmBOoqe36MxkYxh9kW8IqoQh8eaIyWI1PPcDHxOm_2wa2y26mHES5or

@RRocket those mini clippers look ideal for the larger line diameters like the 25-50 range. Have you tried cutting FC with them in those ?

I have cut FC, but not of the size you are asking about.

EDIT: found a video of various lines being cut

I’ve used braid for over thirty years and have went through most every brand of “braid scissors”. Eventually, they have all failed.

In that same time I have used Fiskars in my professional work and they have never failed me in strength, sharpness and comfort.

I use the non stick titanium #5  for line cutting. For $10 at Walmart they are a good deal and very, very sharp and will snip braid cleanly with ease (not to mention any fluro or mono). The sizing is the same as typical Rapala, Culprit etc. brands.

And a lifetime warranty!

I am intrigued by the Pitbull brand @A-Jay linked.

edit: okay, so the reviews convinced me. I bought the Pitbull cutters!

Thanks @A-Jay

I use fishksrs as well.  And they are very good especially on light braid which when I am looking for that close trim on a leader connection knot can be a little tricky.

Hate the too long fuzzy braid tag end.

Get a Berkley Hot Knife and the type of line doesn’t matter.

image.png.5fc858621e34d47c4fd1a42a281c2098.png

Cudas at home and the scissors on my Leatherman in the boat and clippers for mono and fluorocarbon.

IME, if I use scissors that cut braid well to also cut mono and fluoro line they will become less-than-great- at cutting braid. I try to keep my braid scissors strictly for braid. Eventually I invariably end up using them for mono and fluoro and eventually they become duller to the point that they don't cut the braid as easily and cleanly. I've tried at least four of the ones I have seen mentioned above and they seem to all suffer the same fate.

Lately, I have just stuck to the cheap Rapala scissors and replace them when they become too dull for my use.

Exactly why I like the Pitbull brand @A-Jay posted. They have a specific notch at the bottom of the blades for cutting mono/fluro lines, keeping the tips sharp for braid. Hopefully 😉

When it comes to cutting braid, some form of micro serrations seem to be the key.  I think they stop the line from slipping in the jaws of the scissors.
