How many baitcast reels below 6.0:1 do you own?

Featured Replies

I have one Shimano Cardiff that I used for throwing big swim baits. It has been a while since I have thrown them hence the past tense, “used”. I generally use 6.X for cranking. I will repurpose the Cardiff once I admit to myself that I have quit on big swim baits.

All of my casting reels are Citica's or Curado's, of this vintage. I just like them. A few were purchased brand new back in the day...others picked up via eBay and FB market place.

I have several older Shimano Bantam XHS 5:1 that I bought on ebay when they were high speed. I still use them for everything.

I have about ten also.

Several TD-S, a couple TD-X, and three TD Zillion Crazy Crankers. Oh, and a pair of newer Lews that I should sell but keep forgetting about.

The old TD reels I got dirt cheap on eBay/marketplace. Yes, I know I have a problem.

Is it bad that I don't know?

I'm pretty sure I have one, maybe two.

If I was a betting man, which I am, I'd say just ONE.

9. I have 7 Concept A/A2 5.6's, and these two SLP Tatula Crazy Crankers w/ ZPI PG spools. (5.5 gear)

Thanks for the replies. I figured some would be using them for deep cranking, large swimbaits or any lure with a lot of resistance on the retrieve. I don't crank more than about 10 feet deep. No large swimbaits. Which is why I'd like to go to higher gears on about 5 of them.

If anyone knows what kind of IPT increase with higher gears I could expect, I'd like to hear your thoughts. How much of an increase in IPT does it take to make a noticeable difference? I haven't tried comparing my Alphas with 7.2 to one with 5.8 gears. Maybe a lot of it is just a mind game on my part. Guess I need to take one of each out for a trial run. Both with AN40 8#.

That setup looks like a piece of art ;)

just one a curado 200i PG which is 5.5:1and its perfect for all around use. I know its designed for cranking but I use it for everything. its not too fast.

I use to use reels that were 5.2:1. The lowest I got now is 6.3:1. Don't feel the need for the slower speeds now.

I use one reel under 7:1. I can always reel slower. But you can only retrieve so fast.

I have one 5.3:1, I use it for crankbaits. Mostly I prefer reels in the 6.3-7.5 range. But I ain't real picky either. I'll find a place for any speed range.

None.

I have a few of these as well. For one specific lake and one specific purpose. When that bite is there, It cannot be matched with a faster reel.

I'm a huge believer in matching reel gear ratio to the technique to maintain a comfortable cadence in retrieve.

I have 2, one is an Abu Garcia Revo X winch and the second is a Kast King Royal Legend 2. I don’t fish large or deep diving cranks but do enjoy throwing crank baits on the Revo, as far as the KK I tell myself I’m going to trade it in for the last 3 BPS spring sale but then I find myself keeping it anyway.

None of the baitcasters that I currently use are less than 6.3.

I've got 1 5.3:1 Ambassadeur, although I switch out the original gears with a 6.3:1 aftermarket set from time to time.

I have 2 spinning reels that are 5.3:1.

I actually like both of them. No reel issues. 😂. Smooth as butta!!
