When I was young and single I spent every dime I had on fishing and hunting gear.  My car cost $500 and I owned fly rod and reel combos over $600.  My home was a cabin with no plumbing, built for $800

  • Gear shaming is weird and cringey whether it's done looking up or whether it's done looking down. You have no idea what you'd buy if you had "that type of money", but the odds are very good that you'd

Retail?

Diawa Fuego CT-H - $110

Dobyns Fury 705CB - $120

My cost? $96

Reel was a Yule gift from my mother-in-law, I got the rod during TW's Black Friday sale.

daiwa tatula SV ($200) paired with a tatula elite rod ($180)

Retail

Shimano Poison Adrena 7'3 MH - $359.99

Shimano Metanium - $419.99

I didn't pay near that though

Daiwa Pluton on a custom swimbait rod.

Bantam on a Megabass Power Versatile or Tatula Elite on an NRX.

Diminishing returns in reels kicks in a lot sooner than in rods. Not a lot of reasons to go above $250 these days. Midrange reels are getting pretty good. Plenty of reasons to own a high end Loomis, St Croix, or custom rod though.

Dx 744 and Core reel.  I got them both 25 percent off 6 years ago.  That's the only real high end I have, everything else is mid range.  Even at mid range I scour the interweb to get a break.

It's crazy how nice the tatulas rods are and they are under 200... crazy good combo bro.

i own 5 of them. insane quality and performance for a rod under $200

Daiwa Tatula SV TW and Tatula rod (pick one).  $350 retail, paid around $235 total.

On the college budget so my most expensive won't match many here but I have a Shimano Curado K on a St. Croix Mojo Bass, so $310 before tax.

I don't normally go anywhere near this big on a rod or reel, but I sold off some other gear to fund this big swimbait setup:

Phenix PSW 869H Deck Hand:     $300

Shimano Tranx 400:                   $300

Total:                                        $600

St. Croix Legend X with a Shimano Stradic Ci4+ getting close to $ 650.00

If you went by retail pricing, it'd be an Abu Fantastista Regista and Shimano Core.  Luckily, I bough both at 50% off when Gander Mountain went out of business.

The Abu's a nice rod, but I can buy two Kistlers for the Abu's $499 retail.

Shimano Curado DC 150 on a Dobyns Champion XP 705=480.00+-

Shimano Chronarch MGL paired with a St. Croix Legend Tournament. Love this setup!

St Croix Legend Elite 7’ MF $380.00 on sale

Diawa Tatula 2500

$160 from EBay
