  1. Spinning. More comfy on my wrists.
  2. I'm a big fan of my 6'9" MH Zillion rod w/ Zillion 7.1 reel. How much do I like it? Well this past weekend, I put 2 in the boat on a jig. Why does that matter? Because I freakin' stink with a jig. I like this stick.
  3. I STRONGLY prefer spinning equipment for hard jerkbait fishing. I find it much more comfortable than casting equipment. This year, I've found that my 6'6" BPS Extreme MH rod (rated for 1/4 - 5/8) with a Stradic 2500 is pretty darn good for this. I'm able to comfortably throw both Pointer 78s and 100s, as well as the smaller and larger X-raps. I've got the same rod that RW recommends and it does work well for this application. However, my wrists are much bigger fans of the spinning outfit. For colors, I like American Shad, Ghost Minnow, Chartreuse Shad, and the Rapala silver and gold versions.
  4. Funny...for me, usually I don't feel the bite. Rather the weight of the fish is just there after I pause the bait and try to jerk again.
  5. Exactly... I know from experience...it's hard as heck to not set the hook immediately, but do your best to give the bass a few seconds to get the bait in his mouth. Then cross his eyes
  6. Hey all, I'm considering upgrading to a color fishfinder from my current Humminbird 535. I've played with the settings A TON, and I'm just not terribly satisfied with the results. Reading through grass is always tricky. That, and I like the pretty colors on the nicer ones So with that said, does anyone have any advice on this? I fish out of a jonboat on smaller waters around Atlanta -- so as much as I'd like the Humminbird 1197SI, I think having electronics that cost more than the boat is a bit overkill Ideas? Suggestions? Lowrance? Eagle? A different Humminbird? I'm hoping to stay around $500 or less.
  7. Yep... Split shot rigs and 1/8 oz shakey heads are my preferred applications on my Tierra 2000/AS69MLXF combo.
  8. Go with a 3000/3500/4000 series Shimano or Daiwa, and an Avid AVS70MF or AVS70MHF. The 4000 size would likely be better suited for the 14lb mono, but I'd also suggest braid as an option for the inshore saltwater combo. If you go with braid, you can even do a 2500 sized reel. For reference, I've spent a good bit of time fishing inshore with a Stradic 2500, 20lbs braid and a 7' MH Extreme freshwater rod. Fun times!
  9. 3 'incidents' come to mind 1) My honeymoon in St Lucia. The wife agreed to a deep-sea fishing trip. We were on the boat with 2 other couples, each person taking a 15 minute shift in the fighting chair. Just as my watch was winding down, my wife commented that she saw something flash just behind the lure. Then it happened... The next minutes were a blur to me. My "fighting" of the fish consisted of making sure the rod and reel did not go overboard. The mate was yelling at me to crank and pump the rod, but the fish had other ideas. After 20 min or so, I was worn out so I handed the fight off to the next guy. I know, I know -- once in a lifetime experience, etc. Problem is 2 other couples paid, so they needed to get in on the action as well After another 45 min, and 4 more people fighting the fish, we wrestled a 500 lb blue marlin to the side of the boat. That remains the only time I prayed to NOT catch another fish on a fishing trip. I couldn't fight another fish if I wanted to that day 2) inshore fishing in Yulee, FL. Hooked a 10 lb Jack on a M action freshwater rod. Man, was that FUN! 3) inshore fishing in Hilton Head, SC. Was out for redfish and took my Stradic 2500, 7 MH freshwater rod with me, spooled with 20 lb braid. Felt a tep-tap and set the hook, and then the drag started SCREAMING. Nearly got spooled twice and finally got the fish boatside. Had a nice 16 lb bonnet head shark -- foul hooked in the dorsal fin. DOH! Still a good time, though
  10. So I take it the 3 Shimanos are chanting "We're not worthy" to the Revo, right?
  11. Dear Detroit, Please let Calvin Johnson go to a team that's relevant, and where his skills can be utilized that stands a snowball's change in heck of winning a few games. Sincerely, Me
  12. If work lets me out, I'm there. ;D
  13. Can it be done? Yes. But I think you'd need to spend more $$$ to get a baitcasting rig that would toss the really light stuff well. Something a spinning rig can do for much less money The baitcasting reels known for their ability to perform well with light baits: Chronarch Mg Curado 100 Daiwa Alpha/Pixy Calcutta None of these are at the low end of the price spectrum. Meanwhile, you can get any number of spinning reels to do this, and do it very well, for as little as $50.
  14. As a Georgia Tech fan and alumnus, thank you for providing that great entertainment. I enjoyed every minute (but mostly the first half).
  15. Looks just like where I grew up in New Jersey... Oh wait... :
  16. I read this website partly because I was told there would be no math. Thanks for ruining it for me. PS: Sounds like a great trip.
  17. Anyone one of you guys looking to unload some LH Revos, let me know
  18. This is good advice. But if you're looking to stay in your original price range, I'd recommend a Bass Pro rod. The BPS Extremes go on sale a lot for around $70. I think a 6'6" or 7' MH rod would do you well for those uses.
  19. Zoom. And they're a good bit cheaper
  20. Pick up a pack or two of the Strike King Shadalicious soft swimbaits.
  21. I don't care who the starting RB is...If the OSU OL blocks as poorly as they did on Sat, it'll be a LOOOONNNNNNGGGGGG day for the Buckeyes. USC's just slightly better than Ohio
