As I thought, the bite picked up with the second day of warming and the clouds moving in. Winds turned out lighter than expected as they died down to just a breeze after lunch. Probably would have been fine taking the boat out in hindsight - oh, well. Still had a good time; caught 21, mostly on blade bait. Need a few days of rain to let my “tennis elbow” recover a little bit ? Here’s a few…

Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

  • So I went fishing today, and caught a 9#. Scale bounced between 8-15 and 9-2, but let's call it a 9, shall we? NLMB trout eater.   Super slow rolling a 8" weedless on the bottom in about 15

i'm gonna catch a bass this week. and when i do. i'm gonna post it. and there's nothing you can do about it

First Texas bass.  We're in a VRBO on a small private lake/pond in east Texas.  Took me all of 10 minutes on the dock to catch a 5-7.  I like Texas so far. Texas5-7.jpg.99892949d37f5c4ac956f1e944ea2d19.jpg

I didn't have a good day today but it's kinda comical though.   I'm on vacation next week.  I almost didn't go today.  There was a fairy big tournament today.   I considered going to another lake, but didn't.   So,  I get to the landing, get out of my truck, put my coat on and think "boy something smells bad".  I figured someone bank fishing had left a bucket of shrimp or something sitting around.   I'm all alone except for a guy launching a kayak.   When I won't be in anyones way I just tie my boat to the dock with a long rope, back the trailer in and "send it".  I did.........it ripped the cleat off the dock.  (dock is half rotten).   Luckily kayak guy saw it, grabbed the rope and pedaled it to me.  I offered to pay but he wouldn't accept anything.   I drive away from the landing, but he bad smell doesn't go away.  Last Sunday I was fishing in the rain.  I just threw my wet coat into the back of my truck.  The smell was my coat.  I had a lighter coat in my boat, but I was about to freeze with it on, so I put the smelly one back on.  I had bought a couple Berkley Frittside cranks.  Several people told me they were more durable than the DT6's I like.   On my THIRD CAST  the eyelet pulled out.  This caused a BIG backlash.   (I rarely backlash)   The line on that reel was due to be changed so I just put that reel away.  I tied a DT6 on a different reel and heaved it into the wind.   For some reason I had the brakes on zero.  I got a pretty bad backlash on that one but was able to pick it out.  (did I mention that I rarely backlash?  LOL)  A few cast with it, then I tried my new $42 swimbait.  No luck (or backlashes) with it.  It was pretty windy so a lure that runs close to the surface probably wasn't ideal today.   I pick up the combo with a T-rig.   Somehow during my cast I got the line wrapped around the end of the rod.  I spiked the t-rig and...........got a pretty bad backlash.  (did I mention that I rarely backlash?)   I hate getting skunked but figured someone was trying to tell me to go back home.  I decided that I was going to catch one bass, then go home.   An hour later (and no more backlashes) I finally caught one.  I came home, changed line on the reels that needed it and got our camper ready for Monday.  I'm going back tomorrow and expect to have a better day.   The camper is ready for Monday morning.  I'll leave the boat at the campground tomorrow so I won't have to make 2 trips Monday.  When we come home from camping I'll leave the boat again, the go fishing the next day, and bring it home.  The bass I caught was a nice fat 15 inch Largemouth.  I don't think I've ever worked so hard for a single bass.

Way to stay with it Woody! A lot of us would have gone home with a bad backlash attitude. You've taught us a lesson......never give up until the skunk is out of the boat!

Small ponds always produce the biggest bass from what I’ve seen. You can fish 3 lifetimes and never catch a 10 lber on my home lake. Usually only takes a day or two on cow ponds, my buddy had one growing up that was darn near automatic

too many mouths to feed as well as other species in big rivers/lakes

That's a fact! I have an Uncle who owns a 7 acre pond in West Tennessee, and he caught a 13.68 LM a few years ago on a beetle spin, fishing for crappie. He took a picture because he knows how much fisherman trust fisherman!

Got my best one since last spring. Dark, pre rain conditions had me using my neo pearl Rozante. She weighed 5.74. Also caught several smaller ones before the weather moved in.

Apparently I was fishing the wrong pond again today based on @The Bassman report ? but I’ve got a Rozante on the way from TW, so maybe my luck will change soon - lol. I could only get one on a jerkbait today, so switched back to a couple blade baits and ended up with 10 fishing between lines of passing rain. Reports are for 1”-3” by the time this all ends Saturday, so I’m guessing heavily stained waters will scuttle my TW attempts at enticing a couple bigger fish ?

A little tip with those jerkbaits: all of mine have been slow floaters. I beef up the split rings to get them neutral or even do the slow death sink in cold water.

Still struggling this year with size, and between work, weather, and things in my personal life, I think I missed my window for any true giants. Still plenty of time left in 2023 for some big ones, though.

This has been about the consistent size of what I've been catching lately. This one yesterday slammed my Chatterbait but decided it fancied an ear piercing more than a meal, I guess.

Hang in there Aaron! Just remember life has it's ups and downs. For every problem, there will be a solution, however difficult it is sometimes to realize. Just keep walking through the rain and sooner or later, there will be the sun!

I'm not getting too down about it, sometimes you're on a hot streak and sometimes you're not. Disappointing but not the worst thing to happen, I'll get lucky again one of these days I'm sure. But thank you for the encouragement :)

Best part is where your fishing every cast can be your new PB.  Good luck A. It will come
