Quest for a monster northern largemouth, pics if you got em please

Recommended Posts

Setting a couple goals for this year's fishing season. I live in Ohio and every now and then someone in the northern areas catch a monster. Trying to convince myself there's a true 10 pound northern bass in Ohio as I've seen a few pics of such fish. Anyone have pics of an 8 or bigger  non Florida strain one?  I know it's a really tough goal, but possible? Any encougement appreciated.

There was an 11.18 lbs bass caught in the tidal Potomac here in MD...Not FL strain.  Not too long ago, 2008.  There's a picture in the article, though it's not the best quality.  Pretty cool story, he had to use his boat as an ice-breaker to get to his spot.

There were 3 over 10 taken from the same lake in KS last year, this was the largest at 10lb 15oz.

This 10.1 was caught the next day.

Haven't quite broke 8 but gotten to within a quarter of a pound more than once, this was the most recent.

There are pics online of two bass that were caught out of Lake of the Ozarks about a month apart that went 10 pounds. I think this was 2 or 3 years ago.

The story goes about 15 years ago a 12 pound bass was caught locally, and the picture was up in a nearby bait and tackle store.  The store took the picture down because it was causing such a ruckus with everyone wanting to fish at that location.

The lake I fish in SW MO has produced a few in the 10 range.  Several years ago one of my friends caught a 10 there.  I was stopped by a guy a few years ago and asked if I had a scale.  I weighed his 9 pounder.  I have only had some 7s and 8s and they are not often.

I keep trying for a monster on an A rig but can't get anything over a 6 on it yet.

I wish I would have weighed this one! 2 days after Christmas in ‘07(?) . It hit a gold silver buddy, how ironic. This sucker about pulled me offf the front deck of the boat, I had to dip the rod all the way in the water. I don’t know if TN counts as northern strain but I got it in a small mountain lake with no Florida strain stockings

Kid caught one like that in a small pond too. And I know of 2 bigger out of this hell hole,...I mean state.

The state record for Ohio is over 13, so a 10 is certainly doable.

I recommend reading Lunker Lore.  I just finished it and thought it was a good read about focusing on catching monster bass.  https://www.amazon.com/Lunker-Lore-Quest-Fish-Lifetime-ebook/dp/B077CM7LN8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1548080746&sr=8-5&keywords=lunker

There are plenty of opportunities for bass over eight pounds in Missouri. Over ten- not so much, but they're here. So here's a few of mine, including the over eights, from 2018.

Peace.

Indiana's state record is over 14 but I'm pretty sure it was Fla. strain as the run of fish approaching that size didn't persist for too long. A s.r. just shy of 12# held for many years and was probably northern strain. All these fish came from southern IN lakes. If my history is off @Team9nine's help would be appreciated.

Edit;  Evidently the current record (which actually was just shy of 15# was in fact northern strain. In a state not particularly known for it's bass fishing that's something to be proud of.

I know the Ohio record  was a northern stain. I read the article they had it tested. I did also read the Indiana one might have been grown or possibly FL strain like you say.

Yep - northern strain...which is why our state record will never be broken again in our lifetimes B)

This shows the most recent state record bass for Indiana, all three of them, which goes back to 1968, a span of 50 years.

The top left and right photos are one many probably haven't seen, and that was the 11-11 record set in 1968 by Curt Reynolds, and taken from Ferdinand Lake in Dubois Co. Look at the gut on that thing.

Next (No. 2) was Warren Alexander's 1990 state record bass of 12-06. That fish was caught out of a 2-acre pond that was 15 feet deep, and caught on a chartreuse and white spinnerbait. The pond was located in Perry Co., and Warren wouldn't divulge much more. The bass was 23" long and had a 22.5" girth.

Unfortunately for Warren, unlike the record he broke that stood for 22 years, Warren's record was broken the very next year when Jennifer Schultz caught the current 14-12 state record on a Pop-R from a small private reservoir in Harrison Co. That fish is bottom left in the picture.

Thanks. That isn't all of them, just all that my limited technical capabilities could handle. And '18 was actually off a fair bit from usual what with our lack of Spring weather.

And no nines. Certainly no tens. But I'm still lookin'.

I live in SW Ohio as well and our best chance for a monster LM are ponds or a drive up to Lake Erie.
