Quality Pliers

Featured Replies

Looking for a suggestion on some quality plier brands- I usually just use the ol' hardware pliers sitting around but they have gotten rusty and am looking to upgrade.

I am assuming aluminum is the best?

TIA

  • I got the 7" Split-ring nose Kast King Intimidator pliers for $20 from Amazon last spring. They've done good by me. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L2VBC7W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?

  • I think it works a little better...the split-ring tip grabs the hook more securely IMO, making it a little easier to work the hook loose from the fish.

  • Whether 3 in 1 oil or WD40, I think the preferred method is to treat AFTER fishing, and wipe down the next day, or at least before the next trip.

I got a pair of $20 aluminum pliers off amazon about 4 years ago and they still work just fine.   They were similar to these https://www.amazon.com/Piscifun-Aluminium-Fishing-Remover-Generation/dp/B075965MS3/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=aluminum+fishing+pliers&qid=1639270177&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-4

I have used them countless times and they are never taken out of my kayak so they have been through a lot and they are still solid.

^ive got the kast king pliers as well. Love them! The cutters cut braid with ease too which is a huge bonus

I bought some from Bass Pro around eight years or so ago. Don't remember the price, but they have been an excellent tool.

Gerber magniplier salt or fresh

Wow... Too much risk me throwing that over the edge instead of the fish :D

Maybe spending this much would make sure I never make that mistake again.

I have a multi-tool from Walmart and those pliers are fine, if we're talking hook removal. Fine for other things too really.

I used to use hemos but on tough removals they would fail - as in they weren't strong enough to "stay together" if I had to twist out a tough hook. Maybe I had a cheap pair.

? I did that once. I've been using cheap Stanley needle nose from Wally World for several years. They rusted shut on me once. I soaked them with synthetic 2 stroke oil for a couple days and they worked right loose and have been good since. After the soak they developed a petina and quit rusting.

Does the split ring nose compromise other uses of the pliers, like grabbing hooks to remove them from fish?  I've never had pliers with that nose.

Great pliers. I highly recommend them as well. They go on sale from time to time. Especially this time of year.

I've had many good pliers I liked until they rusted - this includes jaw inserts on alloy pliers.

Danco Premio titanium are the last word in pliers that will never rust out of use.

And realistically priced.

However, replacing the leather sheath for a nylon Booms sheath is also smart if you keep them staged in a kayak.

Cutters, yes, but I've never found a split-ring tool on working pliers to be worthwhile - separate tool(s) for that.

I’ve purchased the kast king pliers with the braid cutters on the side from kast king on eBay. This will be the 3rd summer I’ve had them. I like the pliers a lot and think they are good deal at $20ish. Next time I buy them I’d buy them with out the split ring remover at the end.  I find it kinda annoying sometimes in un-hooking fish.  I have another set of split ring pliers if I need to replace a split ring.

I have needle nose pliers that are easily 12 years old, made by Rapala. Been used a ton in both salt and fresh, still good as new.

I have the same as flyfisher.

And about 10 other pliers, but this is the first that has never let me down.  Mine are actually a different brand but obviously the same chinese stuff.  The ones I have are here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012FGME00/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As a split ring pliers it sucks as a general pliers it is great.  I have a long nosed one as well for the times you need it as well as the Xuron split ring pliers.

If rusty pliers are a problem, introduce yourself to a jar of Naval Jelly.  A couple times each season spray your pliers' joint with WD40.

I have the same ones.  Mine are the anodized black Rapala that have split ring nose and are 20 years old.  I have had a lot of other sets as well and none have held up as well.

Mine rusted.  Some random brand from Amazon. I loved the side mounted braid cutter.  I could really snip tag ends tight with this configuration.   My last TW shipment I added the Gamakatsu pliers.  I laughed when I got them. They are literally the exact same unit as my rusted out pair. Just a new color and badging.
they will probably last the same two years with the same WD40 random wipe down.

I like the Gerbers.

Fixed that for you.  WD-40 is garbage.
