Small crankbait rod recommendation

Who’s got a recommendation for small crank baits like DT-6, DT-4, OG, tiny OG and other balsa baits?  Considering another purchase for these.

I don't consider those small, but in that range, the Little John and Aska get bit for me also.

Whoops - this was supposed to be in the rod and reel section.  I’m looking for a rod recommendation for those baits.

can any of the mods relocate this?

Those crankbaits are not real small but not huge or very heavy. Can be thrown on a spinning set up if you wanted to. Moderate action, medium power.  I’m not comfortable about spending your money. And just my opinion on an affordable not bank breaking crankbait rods is the Abu Garcia Veritas “Winch”. This series of rods is made in casting and spinning. I use both. With slower retrieving reels. True moderate actions in my opinion. Pretty light also. Doesn’t feel like your handling a light pole. Options on length and power are with the casting rods. I like the 7 foot versions.

Get a moderate ACTION rod of the length you like (I like 7 feet or 7'-3" for cranks) with the POWER lure recommendations for the rod about centered over the most likely lure weight you'll be using.  This is to get the rod to load properly for easy casting.

daiwa tatula/tatula elite 7' ML

randy howell won the 2014 classic throwing a dt-6 on this rod

TTU701MLRB or TAEL701MLRB

edit: don't be intimidated by the "medium light" rating, it has plenty of power

ALX IKOS Hustler

Made for just that reason - small , medium cranks.

I'm in the exact same situation as the OP right now.

I've got quite a few Tats and like them for the most part... But they are generally very stiff/fast.

Are the "regulars" quite a bit slower?

Any experience with the TTU701MLRB Vs the TTU701MRB-G?

i have the TAEL701MLRB and it's one of my favorite rods. definitely not stiff or fast. perfect for lighter topwaters, squarebills, small-medium sized crankbaits. i've thrown jerkbaits on it too but i prefer my 6'6 medium fast action tatula for that.

i don't have any experience with the glass rod and typically do no care for glass

St. Croix Legend Glass Mod. Med. They have both spinning and casting.

2x on this one. That glass can really sling a smaller plug.

ALX Zolo Crank 7’4” designed for lures referenced by the OP

Tom

The new SC legend that is coming out in March. They have several cranking options and a few in glass too.

I’m going to give the Kistler Z-Bone 6’9” medium a try this spring. I’m not a fan of composite or glass rods. To heavy.
I’ll be throwing lipless, square bills and smaller bigger bill deeper diving baits.

I use a Berkley Lightning Rod for those.  M/MF.  For crankbaits, I don't need high sensitivity.  And I catch more fish off this cheap rod than any other I own.  Even with this cheap rod, I can feel the crankbait moving through the water and deflecting off things.  Bite detection is no problem.   In my opinion, the line you use is more important for sensitivity purposes than the rod when it comes to cranks.

I'd just look for a rod with a moderate to moderate fast speed, depending on your preference, with a lure weight rating that covers those baits, somewhere in the middle of it's scale.

Check out the Kistler Feel N Reel series.

Yep, great suggestion.

Falcon 7’ trapcaster/all-around is a good choice. I have one and fish dt-4/6 on it. I imagine the Mansfield is pretty good too.

The Dobyns standard (as in not cranking specific) rods will work fine with their more moderate action, I would to the 703C or 733C.

I use a Dobyns Champion Extreme 702c for small balsa crankbaits sometimes. They are hard to throw but this rod with a Daiwa SV light LTD throws them pretty easily and I haven’t had any issues with keeping decent fish pinned.

I think any of the Dobyns 702/703’s will do the job. And more.
