Same here.

A couple of times this year I have found ticks crawling around on my tackle bag after I have picked it back up.  The only thing I can think of is that my scent is on the bag.

I've also gotten them while fishing out of a boat near the bank.  I could never figure out how that was happening until someone told me that they can drop down out of the trees.

I spray mine with permethrin every few trips. You don't want chiggers either.

When I wuz a widdle kid I went fishing with my dad and brother. On the way home I had to pee. That’s when I saw a tick. On my “rhymes with tick”. Right by the meatus (Google that). My dad, God rest his soul, wanted to burn it off with a cigarette. Instead, we pulled it off. It was embedded. 
 

No wonder I have anxiety! ?

My wife is an RN (retired). I’ve thrown in words such as that in daily conversation for the past 36 years lol.

A couple cups of Chlorox in a hot bath will kill them. My wife and sister have Lyme disease so when I get home from tick territory. 

 - I leave my boots in the garage

- Clothes are thrown in the washer

- I soak myself in the tub with Chlorox 

I ask our vet how much NexGard a 260 lb man should take monthly. He just laughed. I wasn't kidding.

 

I have been using the Sawyer Picardin non deet bug spray for years now and it works great.  I do a decent amount of night fishing come  summer time and this stuff does the job.  It also has worked well to prevent ticks when I go fly fishing in areas with tall grass.

 

And yes, I have had ticks in areas I wouldn't want to have again and it isn't fun.  I walked through a nest or something before and pulled off no less than 30 of them.  I am pretty ok with anything in the outdoors but I cannot stand ticks.

 

Ticks are mostly fine. Although I once went through a large grass field and got about a hundred small ones all over my chest and legs. Must have been a nest. That was not so fine. But a few ticks? No biggie.

 

it’s chiggers you need to watch out for. Those things are devil spawns

My father was a gardener in south Jersey and went to the doctor with a growth in the groin area.  The doctor removed a large swollen tick from his crotch.  Lucky for him he didn’t get any side effects from the tick.  That was a first for him.

We deal with ticks up here in both turkey season and deer season.  I've found permethrin spray to be 100% effective.  I buy a premixed aerosol version called "Mosquito Shield" and one can does all the clothing my son and I will use for a given season.  Easy to use - just spray your clothing down and let it hang outside in the sun to dry (doesn't take long).  It lasts several washings, and we've never had a tick on us when using it.  If we wear untreated clothes, it's a different story.

my buddy’s son had caught the deck screw while magnet fishing, so he claims he single handedly saved me from a tick borne meat allergy. Little guy is a walking encyclopedia 

So another update - I bought some Sawyer permethrin but we're gonna send 'er back after reading the warning label on the bottle. My loving wife - bless her - is still along for the tick-prevention ride, and she read a bunch and found out that apparently cedarwood oil spray repels & kills 'em. So we're gonna give that a go with some big 'ol socks, and we'll tuck pants into them and just coat everything with this stuff. I'm not usually big on essential oil mumbo jumbo (peppermint oil cures cancer if you're a Libra and the moon is in it's second chakra phase, dontcha know!) but this stuff has pretty good reviews...

 

We will see. 

 

On another note, I had a few Q's regarding trailer hubs & wiring if any of y'all had a sec to check that out. I'll be patching the kayak up today too - it's like living in Productiveville over here!

Had my first tick in probably 15 years this year and I am an outdoor guy.  I feel lucky I haven’t had more.  I just assumed I don’t taste very good, so they have stayed away from me.  
 

The leeches bring back a nasty memory.   My brother and I were in the BWCAW and saw a “natural hot tub” along a river.   It was a place that the water had swirled and dug out a literal 2-3’ deep hole about 6’ I. Diameter.  It had filled with water during high river and had warmed in the sun.  We stripped down to underwear and jumped in and took a warm break.   When we got out about 30 minutes later, we were covered in leeches.  They were small ones, but they were everywhere.  We picked what could off ourselves, then, like monkeys, we started picking them off each other.  It was nasty.
