The new toy is finally getting a good workout around here. Cleared about 14” this morning before work, and when I got home there’s another 10” ready to blow again. Still more squalls coming all this e

Is it frozen?

Not totally sure but I think low or non existent residential water pressure is part of it.  It's  also close to zero degrees.

Here's some fun info ~

With Temperatures in the single digits, keep in mind road salt is not as effective against ice in extreme cold temperatures. See chart below. At a temperature of 30 degrees, one pound of salt will melt 46 pounds of ice. As the temperature drops, salt's effectiveness slows to the point when the temperature drops down near 10 degrees and below, salt hardly works at all. Road Commission crews will use more of a salt/sand mixture during extremely low temperatures to give road surfaces some “grit” for better traction. The sand does not remove the ice! It is important to keep a safe distance from other vehicles, reduce speeds and give yourself adequate travel time to reach your destination safely.

When I lived in Massachusetts they used cinders and here they use liquid brine, salt and sand.

Long as it doesn't get too cold - 0 degrees fahrenheit is the temp that salt water freezes, so that brine won't help.

I think they put way too much salt on our roads, sidewalks, and parking lots here.  In fact, it's gotten so progressively bad that many of our lakes are deemed to be too salty because of it.  If it continues on this path, especially in more populated areas, some of our lakes will not be able to sustain ecosystems anymore.  The issue is that when it rains in the spring and/or all the snow melts, all that salt ends up in the storm drains and eventually in streams, rivers, creeks, and lakes.

I'm all for trying to make road surfaces safe for motorists, but we're slowly just ruining our waterways to do it.  We need a better alternative.  Or use way less salt.

This is how my day started. Those are my fresh tracks. Access road to a well pad. Roughly a 15% grade. Producer was slacking and hadn't touched the road. I was a mile back into the woods, and backing out wasn't an option, so I chained up and gave it a go. I spun out, then slid backward until my trailer slid over onto the shoulder and gave me enough traction to get stopped.

Fortunately there was enough shoulder there for me to back down to the bottom without it getting away from me. I backed out to a wider spot, made a call, then spent 5 boring hours waiting on a plow truck to arrive and plow and cinder the way into the pad for me.

Amazing how scared you can be at 3mph. I was puckered up so tight you couldn't have hammered a needle up my butt with a sledgehammer!!!  Lol. #Crudehaulerlife

I finally drove my truck for the first time in a week to go watch hoops at my buddy’s house. Bout the time the game was over , my wife calls for the umpteenth time. A car on our street was off in the ditch and they were having to wave their arms at oncoming cars  (which thankfully was only 2-3) before they started downhill on ice toward the sideways car. She told them I could come pull them out with my truck then proceeded to pull into our driveway……. But she got stuck sideways about 60 feet short haha. So I come home and we push her car up the hill and into the driveway after some chipping with a shovel. Then another neighbor got my tow strap all hooked up and I pulled the Camry out of the ditch.

the funniest part of it all is that my wife has told me all week that my 4x4 was not much help and only people from Ohio with tiny cars know how to drive on ice 😂. 4x4 saves the day

I'm gonna say that wheel houses/permanent shacks will not get ANY use on the ice this winter in the southern half of the state.  There will not be any vehicles on the lakes around here either all winter.

The deadline to remove overnight shacks is March 6.  That is not that far away.  And with warm temps coming again...

“Nothing stops the US mail!……. Except snow”

They forgot the unofficial motto

“Motto” of the Postal Service: Two Postal Tributes Chiseled in Stone
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
While the Postal Service has no official motto, the popular belief that it does is a tribute to America's postal workers. The words above, thought to be the motto, are chiseled in gray granite over the entrance to the New York City Post Office on 8th Avenue

Weather people are expecting us to get 3 to 4 days of on and off rain.  They are saying we could have freezing rain and ice late tonight and into Monday until the weather warms up enough to have the moisture turn completely to rain.  I went to work this morning to get my laptop so I could work from home tomorrow.  Ain't no way I'm driving to work with these crazy drivers.

Just saw a plumber go sideways down the hill and now he’s blocking the street and people are spinning around trying to back up the hill……….

we did have a neighborhood chipping party, bout 3 inch thick sheets of ice on the road. I don’t think anyone has gotten mail in 7 days, mine is all junk and bills anyway

Forecasted highs here in a week.  And this is supposed to be the coldest time of the year too.  Would not surprise me to see a motorcycle or two out on the road.

The guy who had his full-size pickup out near the middle of Black Lake a couple days ago should pay heed...
