Am I the only one….

Who can’t not get a bite on a Whopper Plopper? I’ve had a couple on but they always come off, other than that nothing. Not even a short strike.

@A-Jay can I get a refund? 😂

When you cast it out, do you let it sit for a few seconds?  It helps.

No, you're not the only one.

One bite since they hit the market.   Rat smallie in 22 feet of water

I regret purchasing a few several years ago.

Can’t be much different than a buzzbait right?

IDK, I was stoked when I got them.

I think I’ve caught a couple bass on them.

If they are hitting topwater, then they are destroying the Plopper.  There have been early mornings that I have caught five bass in five casts on a WP 90 or 110.  Just like any other topwater lure, it's finicky.  The conditions have to be right for any topwater, but the WP and a Zara Spook are my best topwater lures.  Both beat the frog by a country mile.  I'll only use a frog in slop.

If the sun is not quite up or just came up and I have a pinch point to fish, it's on.

If you prefer a Choppo that works just as well.  I have several WPs and one Choppo and I find no difference in catch rate.  Just have to get the color correct for the conditions (and by that I mean light/chrome or black)

For me, slowing down was the key to getting bit on the plopper. If it sounds like a sprinkler, it's too fast. Really need to get it hitting that whop whop whop sound. I throw the 110 size exclusively these days, on a 7'2" M/XF with 30lb braid.

I got one quite awhile after they came out. Didn't catch squat. Picked up a couple more several years later to give them another chance. Now it's one of my most productive baits.

You know I can't get bit on a WP

Because you have all mine.

You're so very welcome.

I've caught many fish on every size, except the 190. My PB showed herself by striking at my 110 WP before I caught her on a Stick - O. They work, it's all about timing.

I've not had any success with them yet. I've a couple strikes on them, but none hooking up. I've never bought one. I've found about 8 or so in the course of the last couple of years. I currently have a couple, including a choppo. I like the choppo better, I think it gives a bit less line twist.

The Whopper Plopper was a hot bait for about a year. And then the bass held a meeting...

I catch bass with them, but do much better with a buzzbait, popper, or spook.

Yup, and that year was 2018-2019 where it was red hot. I could've totally misfired a cast and chucked a WP into the woods and bass would've self-hooked itself on one. Since then? (Insert farting sound)

Now it's just a hail Mary bait only accounting for a few dozen fish since then.

First thing that popped in my head when I read this….

Season 2 Nbc GIF by The Office

Most of my topwater fish the last few years have been on a Plopper or Choppo.

I have found that my hookup percentage is best with the 75mm size - I’m assuming less leverage to throw it, or just easier to get both hooks from the side.

This is a lure I won't buy or use. But my buddies do. I have yet to see any of them catch a fish on it.

I know when my buddies pull out the whopper plopper is when I can pull ahead of them with other things...

I get a smirky smile going on when I see them pull out the whopper plopper! That is when I redouble my efforts and pick up the casting cycle just to take advantage of this opportunity.

As soon as I catch a fish that is not on the whopper plopper watch how fast they put it away. 😎

Then my smirky smile turns into a laugh! Ha!

I know they catch fish. But, how many times have I gotta cast it just to catch one? Nope. Going back to what I consider more productive lure presentations that are also more fun than watching paint peel!

So no, you are not the only one not catching fish on it. I am with ya and I don't even use one!

I have done well with them. Conditions DO have to be right. Haven't had much chance to get out much lately though, so it has been a while.

Caught quite a few on them on the Ontario trip this year. Most were right after it landed and just started moving it. Not as many later in the retrieve.

I run them SLOW! Like just fast enough to to make the blades turn. Chug, chug, chug!

Maybe my buddies are not using them slow enough?

But when you say the lure was hit as soon as it lands tells me those fish would have hit just about anything that moves that came within range.

My fishing partner does well on the 75 with a jerk jerk jerk all the way to the boat.

He never stops it nor does he use a steady retrieve.

I prefer a buzz bait.

Oh, did catch a blue cat on a 120 in bone.PXL_20250515_1145211292.jpg.f0e8d0ad61948a905e7220f015ebd3d8.jpg

Best bass I've caught in the last two years was on a choppo 75. I only throw it in March and April though
