Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

Trick or treat on a 23+lb Bag!!

The wind switched to 12mph out of the West instead of the last 4 days of 15mph+ out of the East and my magic rock water cleared up and calmed down enough to actually fish properly.  The smallies seemed just as excited as me as long as I was throwing a 3.2" juster swimbait.  I landed a lucky 13, got sawed off in the rocks by 2 more angry fish, and had multiple that I never quite got the hook into.  Just a great morning of bfs city smallies.

Still at it and still on them for now. Moved around to stay on fish, and numbers are not the game currently. I will trade that for the size as I get later in the season. My measuring stick has been laying in the trunk so I haven’t put any to tape, but I know pretty well what I’m catching. When you can’t really reverse grip a smallie by the jaw do to heft and size; you’re on good fish. I have strong hands and arms, but some of these are a struggle to handle. I got a decent walleye too, when it clouded up momentarily

My wife left for the airport early so I hooked the boat on and left too.  The wind has been incredible here the past couple days and for the next couple days, but there was a 4-6 hour window forecast this morning where it would only be 5-8 (otherwise 12-20 constant).  I went to the big pond looking for some topwater smallies.  With the water temp dropped down to 56 degrees things are going to start slowing down but there should have been a couple to find.  Always nice when you get to the ramp and are pleasantly surprised.  Not another boat and the water was almost like glass.

I went to a spot I thought might have a few fish and picked a pair of chunkies- one green and one brown, both 17-18”.  A few more were around and would chase a jerkbait and jig head minnow, but just wouldn’t commit to anything I had to throw at them.  I tried bigger and smaller, brighter and subtler, slower and faster.  I tried other baits too and they would come off the bottom or out of a tree, nose it, and turn away.  About that point the wind kicked up pretty bad and I called it a day with spotlock not working for me.

I awoke to 47° and partly cloudy skies. Such a beautiful morning. Alas, the bite was not as good as the morning promised. I caught three. Two decent and a 1 lb.‘er. All on a weightless TR. one with a #956 Senko, one on a red Roboworm and one on a green pumpkin/black flake Zako. I did have one take a nibble at a green pumpkin jig but nothing else interested them. Jigs, A-Jay Special, spinnerbait or a bladed jig. And all three were caught within one hour of each other and then the bite died off fast and final. Did get a good laugh, though. A huge blue heron flew over me and perched on a branch high in a tree overhanging the water. Or shall I say attempted to perch. As soon as it landed and folded its wings, CRACK! the branch broke and fell into the water. You could tell it was taken by surprise because attempting to take flight, he looked like the town drunk stumbling home at 2:00 am.

The pics without fish are the spots where I caught the bass.

@BrianMDTX and @casts_by_fly: Thanks for the scene shots. I like seeing where other anglers catch bass. Don't come to Maine. The winds have been howling at 20-30 mph all day. Lots of branches down. Speaking of broken branches, this is a funny line:

@Swamp Girl - this is the first year of my being able to really fish this lake (too big to fish well in a kayak) so I’m still learning it.  If I could catch 6-10 an evening like some of my others, it would be my favorite due to the scenery.  You can’t see a single house, hear a single car, or have any other sign of civilization on this lake.  It gets a fair bit of pressure from fishermen and pleasure kayakers, but that’s the only downside.

Made it out one more time and talked one dink into playing. Threw a spinner bait a jog and a jerk bait. Our water temps are low and I think that’s a wrap for the season. Time to clean stuff up and organize and watch you tube fishing lol

Slow weekend but did manage to avoid the skunk . Me and a buddy went Saturday and drove all the way up to a dam, he got a striper with a Jerkbait and I got a couple small bass (LM and SM) with a purple worm. He demonstrated the wrong way to wear a PFD 😂. The scenery was excellent

This morning I fished like 3 solid hours without a nibble. Then I finally came back near the dock and got a small SMB. My wife called and said why don’t you come up to the house and eat lunch so I stopped at a point near the dock where it goes from 3-5 feet down to nearly 30. I got a hit up on the shallow part and assumed it was a dink but a nice LM launched itself airborne. It was a handful on my flemsy rod, at one point I had the rod buried underwater on the starboard side and the fish was jumping directly behind me on the port side! 😂

Had another buddy come by Sunday and we fished a bit, he got a nice 14-15” LM but it wouldn’t stop raining so we called it after getting drenched large.IMG_4841.jpeg

What's a "rat weekend"?

@Swamp Girl it's when you catch a million fish and get maybe 2-3 keepers :D

1/8oz Trap and X-Rap, and a big X-Rap thrown in. Proud of this because of the cold water. Cold weather has always been a struggle for me, and I'm starting to figure it out. Small ones are better than no ones.

You are throwing the right things for cold water.  That water doesn't look all that cold though.  🤔

Had my boat at work yesterday because of logistical reasons (good problem to have). Decided to hit the dam with the tiny amount of daylight left after work. At first I had striper on the mind but the water was coming over the top of 2 flood gates and it was too rough (flood gates make waves) for my 18 ft boat. I drifted downriver and started throwing a shad rap and was immediately greeted by a decent smallie. I then caught another small SMB, drum, and a LM. Got to a small creek mouth and saw fish busting , turned out it was small white bass and yellow bass. Caught 5 species and lost count of numbers in 1.5 hours. Fun evening ! Water temp 63

Russ, your photos are top notch. They really put us in the boat with you, letting us see what you saw.

Tried another pond a county south of mine. Fished for app 1.5 hours and got 2, one on a yum dinger and one on a super fluke. 2 bites-2 fish.
The cypress are changing color, which is most of the fall color we see here…
