quick story.  I was maybe mid 20's.  I saved my money up and booked a trip to Lake Huites, in Mexico.  my brother and I went.  he just became a rookie cop and he blew his first few paychecks on the trip.  I am not sure how I paid for my half.  I was waiting tables.

 

anyways.  we showed up unprepared.  a bunch of bass pro lower $ combos and ugly sticks in our shared Bazooka rod tube.  crankbaits, and stuff.  we got this rookie guide (loved him). and we skunked the first day.  we got back to the lodge totally crestfallen.  I heard the guide tell the main guide we skunked.  "nada" is pretty easy to understand in Spanish.  the other fisherman CLEANED UP. stories of 100's of hits.  two guys took us aside and asked us how we were fishing.  we give them the details, and they stopped us.  "no guys.  Motor Oil worms."  there were 8 of them, and they pooled their resources and gave us hooks, sinkers, and worms.  we raided the lodge bait shop as well.  they took us out on the lawn and showed us how to work the worm.  changed my life.

 

got me thinking.  I rarely hear of that color anymore.  I looked for a bag the other day.  online pictures, it is like clean motor oil - orange yellowish.  I remember it being more dark, like 1000 mile old motor oil in a new car.  call it light cola color.  is my memory tainted?  or did they change motor oil the color?

 

I really want a bag to try for nostalgia's sake.  not sure I have ever seen a bag of motor oil worms here locally.

Back in the day , there were three main  colors of worms that I used . Black grape , blueberry and motor oil . The motor oil Jelly worm was brown "cola colored"  then turned a weird green under water .

I'm not sure, but my guess is Green Pumpkin is what caused motor oil to become extinct, while at the same time Black Grape evolved in to Junebug.  I'm sure Motor oil works as well now as it did when green pumpkin was a pumpkin that wasn't ripe, and watermelon was something you ate on the 4th of July.

I think the color might still exists, but the manufactures gave it a new name.  "like Junkyard surprise" or something.

seedless motor oil just doesn't have the same ring.

I bought a bunch directly from Mann's last year but they no longer seem to have them on their website now, so I guess they've been relegated to history.  But at least I have a stash!  ?

Berkley Power worms are still available in MO motor oil color from 4” to 10” lengths.

Mister Twister has a greenish-amber color.

I use the 10” motor oil power worms. Love them. 

I also like the Mr twister phenoms in motor oil...I agree they are amber in color with a greenish sheen.

Motor oil in the Berkley Power Worm still catches fish for me but in the stained water I fish,  there are better colors. 

Sounds more like scuppernong than motor oil. Both are very good colors. 

The Slider motor oil was kinda green looking...and if you held it to the sky it went brown.

Rebel also had a motor oil we use to call STP because it was brownish and when you held it up to the sky it went purple.

Ive been tring to replicate that color (green brown) and have gotten close a couple times.

The color combo I've been using is chartreuse and green.

Zoom still still makes several different worms and other baits in Motoroil color. I don't know if they will be as dark as you are looking for.

One of my top worms is the Manns dragin' paddletail worm in motor oil/gold flake.  Wish they still made the 7" version, but the 5" produces.  This worm THUMPS!

My first bag of Zoom trick worms was motor oil, it had a purple hue to it, almost translucent. Maybe it was motor oil/ purple not sure.  I think zoom has definitely changed it color of them. 

Worm colors are constantly changing slightly without changing the color names. Green Pumpkin  a good example.

I bought a bag of zoom motor oil curly tail worms last season.. I'll make myself use them on my next time on the water. used to love them too... back in the day they were very popular in Mexico as first time I heard of them was at el Cuchillo in the early 2000s.

 

 

I've got a bunch of motor oil worms but they're all over 30 years old.  Modern motor oil worms may be a different color.

 

 

(the original) Motor oil colored worms are the color that Kendall oil used to be when new.   It looked different than pretty much any other motor oil.

Hard to say.  I bought a bunch of motor oil mann's jelly worms last year.  Compared to my old motor oil jelly worms from middle school, the new ones have more green and the old ones are more brown - BUT - my recollection of the motor oil jelly worms is more consistent with the new ones than the old ones in their current state.  I suspect the worm colors may change over time even if properly stored in a cool dark place.
