Changes year to year. Sometimes my top 5 lures would account for around 80%, sometimes less. Depends on where and when I end up doing the most fishing. 

 

I'd need to look at updated numbers, but a top 5 would be something like this for last few years; don't know if it would reach 80% though:
1. Stick worm

2. Spinnerbait

3. Buzzbait

4. Finesse worm

5. Paddletail swimbait

 

The next tier of contenders would include ned rigs, t-rig creatures and worms, poppers, and jigs

 

Worm and fluke 

Crank, ned, spinner 

Drop shot for honorable mention 

soft baits & Jigs, Bladed Jigs, Rattle Traps, Frogs, Floating Jerkbaits, Spinnerbaits. 

 

Topwater - Buzz Baits, Poppers, Walking baits ,X-Rap Double Prop bait....

 

Always carry ultralight rod and mainly use crappie soft baits, spinners, small Rapalas, micro jigs etc.

 

Rarely throw Crankbaits or suspending Jerkbaits or big swimbaits.....

I would say that 80% of my fish come on crankbaits of one kind or another. Not because they are the "best" bait to use, but because they are what I 

use the most. I enjoy throwing a crank bait more than just about anything else.

 

In 2024 my top catching baits:

 

Plastic Worm - either Texas rigged or weightless

Jerkbait

1/4 oz Jig and craw

Spinnerbait

Senko type - either weightless or wacky rigged.

 

Surprisingly, this year I hardly caught anything on a split shot rig.

2. Underspin W/ Trailer (Coolbaits/ Misc Plastics) 

3. Various Plastics in T-Rig, Weightless and D-Shot

 

Honorable mention to Jerkbaits (Vision 110/ Pointer 100) 

Funny I just weighed them all and put them into a spreadsheet and apparently I throw 52 lures on a (somewhat) regular basis...tbh a drop shot would probably be about 50%...a texas rigged ribbon / speed worm and a fluke would probably get me to the 80% mark...maybe add a chatterbait and a jerkbait in there just to make sure we are over the mark but those would definitely be my top 5 and a drop shot w/ a roboworm or a sensei has pretty much been my confidence lure for a while now...

You're in southern California and I'm in northern New England and yet, our lists are quite similar. We're not just far apart, but fishing very different water. I listed the popper and plopper as my two main surface lures, but a walking bait was third. I also listed an underspin and T-Rigged soft plastics. So, we're pretty synced thousands of miles apart.

You're one of the few I know still using a split shot rig. Can't knock it, it works  

 

 

This proves that the 80/20 rule of economics extends to the fishing world.
In my case it depends where I’m fishing, shallower lakes and rivers I’d have to say more than 80% were on either a Ned or a 1/8 jig and Keitech 3” Fat Impact with a 5” Yum Dinger bringing up the rear.
Deep clear reservoirs, drop shot and a max scent flatworm.
 

I catch almost all my fish on finesse plastic worms. Probably 80 percent. Followed by popper, spook, Buzzbait.  Also am fond of Beetlespin and #3 Mepps Black Fury.

I like Mepps too. They're in my 20%. I have never owned a Black Fury, but I know them. I cast the brass Mepps with a plain treble hook.

I'd say these 4 catch at least 80 and probably closer to 85-90% of my fish. I will add that between say mid Nov. And March if and when I find open water I catch probably 99.9% on jerkbaits.

T-rigged senkos and jigs catch 80% of my fish. I tried more moving techniques last year and my numbers suffered greatly. The best thing to do in this situation is to keep pushing and trying to improve in those areas.

 

That being said, I’m likely gonna be going back to the ol bread and butter this year.

5" black/blue flake Yum Dinger. I got my PB pitching it to lilies at the dam of a small lake. I bought a 100 pack off Amazon dirt cheap.

But doing the same thing gets boring sometimes and there's usually more than one way to skin a bass. If I had my way I'd only fish topwaters. But you gotta do what they want more often than not.
