What is your favorite monofilament line?

Featured Replies

I have read many of the older threads on monofilaments but it seems many of the mono lines in those threads have been changed in quality, not sold anymore, or renamed. I like monofilament, I use it on a few of my setups and I like the stretch for chatterbaits/spinnerbaits and for jerkbaits/squarebills. I use have been using Stren High Impact 10lb and I am really tired of the line memory and I plan to try a few different monofilaments in coming weeks, in addition to possibly trying some copoly. As of now I am going to try Sunline Supernatural and Mean Green. I also ordered some KVD Line and Lure from a friend's suggestion upon talking about line memory, but I read some places that it wrecks line sensitivity and strength, so I am hesitant. I really wanted to try the Seaguar Rippin' line that is meant for jerkbaits but it seems it is now out of production. What is your favorite mono line nowadays?

Silver Thread, also out of production. Thankfully I have about 8 miles of it still.

I did enjoy McCoy Mean Green last year though.

Whenever I use mono it’s Berkley XL. Just my preference. As for KVD line conditioner I use it all the time. No problems.

I used Trilene XL on my spinning rigs before going to braid. It’s good stuff. Big Game is also really good and I use the 10# and 20# as leader material. With mono, you don’t need to spend a lot to find good quality.

I've been liking Sufix Elite so far - testing out Sufix Advance this year to see how it performs.

Reel Magic and other silicone sprays degrade the line slightly. The negative effects your Buddy is talking about are greatly exaggerated though.  KVD on the other hand is a polymer that bonds to the line, conditioning and protecting. KVD is the way to go.

Big Game over 12lb test for practical purposes. Painless when I need to re-spool, and it's as tough as a $2 steak.

Sufix Advance 6-10 lb test for lighter line stuff. Nice and smooth.

Sufix Advance  for me. I use it pretty frequently.

Only mono I use for a main line is for a few specific topwater applications.

Big fan of Sunline Defier Armillo 22 lb.

It has an advertised diameter that is smaller or equal to

many brands 15 lb.

Does what I need.

Stren Original is certainly not Defier Armillo, but I use it from 6 to 17 lbs (the heaviest mono I use for freshwater).  I doubt it's changed much since this forum started, but for what I use it for, the other lines would do nothing more than empty my wallet faster.  It does stretch, but it's manageable on the reel.  And you can find it almost as many places as you can Big Game, which I usually see in spools too big to fit in the leader carrier I have.

BTW, I like Mean Green, and don't think this will matter for the purposes listed, but it's a sinking copolymer, not a nylon monofilament.  In 17 lb, it has some memory, not like some fluorocarbon does, but still some.

Berkeley XL 6 or 8 lb on spinning rigs and 10 or 12 lb Big Game on baitcasters.

15 lb Big Game on the baitcasters.  8 or 10 lb Stren or Trilene on the spinning reels.

Sufix Siege in 12# or 14# on baitcasters and 8# or 10# on spinning reels.
