Yesterday, I was disappointed in every color.

  • I will not use a red firetail soft plastic . Sunfish are constantly pecking at it .

  • Red has never impressed me either. I've tried lots of colors, especially back when I started making my own plastics. It all boiled down to Green Pumpkin, Black n Blue, and some variant of a shad patte

I believe we all settle into a few colors of soft plastics that catch bass for us. The problem is color preferences change as they ecosystem changes.

If you fish with skilled partners they will come up with a new hot color if you are not keeping up. You are using your favorite green pumpkin red flake and catching nothing, your partner is using water melon candy and catching bas after bass kicking your butt. The partner gives you his worm and you are now catching bass.

The next trip to the tackle store you stock up on water melon candy. But when are fishing do you use water melon candy or go back to your comfort zone.

Repeat this over a few decades and if you are like me you end up with 17 size Plano 3700 boxes full of worms that all worked at one time.

Keep an open mind or get into a rut...use what is working!

I believe that this is true but in my estimation I would think it occurs more often in clear water or high pressure bodies of water. Green pumpkin or purple plastics and white and chartreuse spinnerbaits have worked in my local body of water for 20 years for me.

Lotta responses here about the lack of success with shades of red. I’ve done decent with red though. The color that underwhelms for me is black/blue.

That is my #2 choice for color disappointment.

Watermelon and Sprayed Grass. Both are really popular plastic colors and neither has been very successful for me.

I think it works better where there are yellow perch present. It used to work for me on my home lake. We used to catch yellow perch while fishing for crappie. But we sold the house there and I rarely fish it anymore.

No yellow perch here but it's a killer color for me.

One day a few months ago I left home without my gear, just had my rod and a coppertreuse hula stickz tied on. Knew the bait would last all day if I decided to not go back and get my vest. Long story short I had a good day. Knowing my personality I probably would have gone to something else after a few minutes since I didn't get bit right away. My biggest obstacle is my own thought process most of the time. I'm not saying that color or lure choice doesn't matter but (for me) choice can handicap success.

Black n Blue always disappoints me somehow. I have plenty of jigs and plastics in that color but they don’t work nearly as well as brown or green pumpkin, even in muddy water. I don’t know what it is.

Black and blue will work for me but a solid black will out fish it. Referring to soft plastics use.

And it's the exact opposite for me. I stopped buying jigs and trailers in anything other than black/blue. We are in different areas of the globe though.

I'm still sucking wind with the same colors as always.

Often its just timing . If fish are not caught its hard to gain  confidence . I had no success on Sexy Shad for a long time , so I just didnt use it even though I knew it was a good pattern .   Eventually I caught a fish here and there and now its a top producer for me .

I don't know about disappointment but Junebug is the color that works for others but not me. I tend to catch fewer and smaller fish with it. Maybe it's because the major forage for the bass near me has become gobies and other colors mimic them better.

Green pumpkin. I'll never know why, but it doesn't work for me me. Have tried worms, grub, tubes, etc. I gave up on it two years ago.

I’m not really all that surprised reds don’t work out real well for me. I’m at the point it in my head. Been there a long time actually.

A bit surprised to see a majority of these posts have an issue as well. Didn’t expect that at all. But there are not many responses. Hope to read many more on both sides of the red color.

I have a post in another section on “pink/bubble gum. I’ve been at smallie fishing for a long long time and have never used is. Don’t even own anything in it. I walk right past that color. Gonna put that phobia behind me this coming season. I have a few things coming from BPS & TW. Gonna give it an honest effort. If it works fine. If not that fine also. Didn’t buy enough to break the bank and what I did buy was items that work and have worked in different patterns.

I’m gonna say one that hasn’t been mentioned, cinnamon purple. Personally, my eyes I think it’s a great looking color, but I haven’t had much luck with it. Might just be that I haven’t given it a fair shot

As far as the red thing goes, I’ll throw red moving baits for a brief period in the pre spawn but that’s about it

I had a buddy wear me out on the Susquehanna, late April, with this spinnerbait. Toledo Gold, 3/8oz. I've since thrown it in the Fall with success also. Stained to muddy water.

I've caught bass on almost every type of color.....Except junebug. Although I tied like crazy to get a bite with it, just never happened.

Reds and oranges don’t work well for me in my lakes, although we generally have pretty clear water and I think that is the issue.

Reds have done ok for me when I throw them. Falcon Lake Craw Rage craws and fire craw chatterbaits with a flamethrower Swimmon. But I don't use them very much.

I guess I don't throw enough colors to be disappointed. If something doesnt work for one outing I usually shelve it for the season and move on. I dont know enough about spawn cycles and all that to zero in on colors at specific times. Watermelons and blues I don't own anything in.

Green Pumpkin

The 2 specific colors Ive tried with little to no success is watermelon candy and a zoom trick worm color that I can’t remember the name of . It looks kind of like camo green . Also, any shade of brown is bad, except for one lake that I do well on with moccasin culprits. I rarely use blue so cant judge that .

I do best with other watermelon colors, esp. Seed and Red . June bug , Red shad , black grape, and occasionally grape all work well for me, as well as green pumpkin. Ive done well with orange senkos too.

As far as red worms go I just dont even own them anymore . They worked all right deep but didnt produce as well as other colors shallow , so they just took up much needed space . Red cranks , I never had a lot of luck with them except my favorite night time crank is a red craw .  It probably just appears black at night .
