Tried braids and floro's for a couple years and I have decided that I prefer straight Mono. I have been using Mr. Crappie 8lb. Hi vis yellow lately because I like to see my line. However I need to keep evolving so I wanted to ask you river fishers that use mono, what mono's do you prefer and what colors give you the most confidence? I fish rivers with current and usually good clarity. BTW had a fun day on the Cumberland yesterday. Hooked 37 and got most in including three channel cats and one flathead. All the bass were small but a bite is a bite! Going to the Tennessee River Sunday, Lord willing!

For spinning gear I recommend a co-polymer, #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid.

I use very limited braid. Couple of particular setups. I use no Fluoro. But think I going to try a SunLine Fluoro on a certain cranking setup I use. Majority of my fishing is with mono. SunLine Supernatural Mono is good stuff, McCoy Mean Green Co-poly is great stuff. Some spinning setup I use for lighter crankbaits is my line of choice. You can use this line hard and stays flat. It’s meant for spinning reels. 
 

I don’t have any beefs with Trilene XL, Big Game or Stren. These will work for me also. I buy my line in bulk spools. Cheaper and makes sense when you change out your line a lot. I fish fairly light 6, 8 and 10#. I’m pretty anal also it gets replaced I’m sure more than average.

The SunLine Super Natural I believe runs slightly less diameter for the same rating as popular others. SLIGHTLY. I probably change/replace my line more than the average guy. Just a natural habit I’m stuck with nowadays. I just don’t like line that is not smooth to the touch and I don’t like memory coils. They make sprays for that but I don’t think those sprays are all that. Seem easier to replace my line after a couple outings that I used it hard.

My favorite line of all time is no longer made, it was Berkley Tournament Strength Mono in Photochromic.  When I was pro staff for Bass Pro I used Excel and it was good since I got it free and changed it often.  I’m still using excel but have been looking for a better option with better visibility.

There was a time when the BPS Excel was great line. That line is not what it was 20 years ago. I was told it was Trilene XL. So I was told. What it is now I have no idea. But they (BPS) will stand behind their products if you are not satisfied. I remember the Photochromic from back in the 80’s I believe and it was a good quality line. 

XT green or clear, doesn't matter.

I use 5 lb Maxima Ultra Green. The strength ie qual to most 8 lb mono, better knot strength and abrasion resistance and .008 dia.

Another option that has been suggested is Sunline Super Natural 8 lb, low memory line, .009D,10lb is .010D

Yo-Zuri Hybrid 6 lb is .010D.

Mr Crappie 8 lb is .010D.

Line diameter and memory is very important on spinning reel.

I'm not picky with my mono. I've found a few which I like and am fully confident in. Trilene XL, Big Game and Yo-Zuri Hybrid (not a mono, I know, but it acts like one). 

Been using Suffix here lately, cause I found it on sale for 8$ / 1000 yards. It’s awesome.

Ya, I loaded 6# Siege on one of my crappie rigs since I got a 1000yd spool from Fleet Farm for $11.  Probably put it on one of my bass spinners too next year...I'm really liking it.

5LB Maxima ultra-green is some nice line.

I like sufix elite in hi-vis yellow for visibility

I don’t use mono much anymore, except as backing for braid. But, when I did use mono exclusively, I used either suffix or spider wire.
Both are inexpensive and good line. 

I have used a lot of different brands over the years but I prefer Big Game or BPS Excel line for mono. I also use Power Pro braid. 

 

I still kinda like Stren Original clear blue.

It's hard to argue against plain simple Trilene XT

Trilene Sensation 12-14lb on my river baitcasters.  I run braid on all of my spinning gear still.

do you use a hi-vis or clear?

Seems like hi vis mono would be a big mistake since it goes all the way to the lure.   

 

I like 14 pound test Suffix Elite camo for baitcasting, prefer premium braids + a leader for spin (for the better sensitivity/bite detection.
