Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 5 Global Moderator Share Posted March 5 Completely impossible, I can drop an anchor one time and catch 3 different kinds of bass on 3 consecutive casts. You can say you are targeting one kind, but if your hook goes into the water you are targeting at least 3

Super User Bankbeater Posted March 5 Super User Share Posted March 5 Most of the time I am targeting largemouth. I have a 2-1/2 to 3 hour drive if I want to target smallmouth.
Way north bass guy
50/50 green or brown here. No spots. Most lakes have both species in them around me.

I've caught a 6 even, and a 6-10, but they're hard to come by in OH. Pitching with fluoro cost me two that I believe would have topped 7#. NEVER AGAIN!!! #STRAIGHTBRAIDBRIGADE!!! 😉 I set the 7# goal for a LM to hit the wall decades ago, knowing it was a lofty goal, but possible in OH public waters. I'll keep after 'em till I no longer can. Maybe someday......

Super User Jar11591 Posted March 5 Super User Share Posted March 5 Fished pretty much exclusively for smallmouth as a kid. My dad would take me to the river or rocky, smallmouth lakes so that’s all I fished for. Then for a long time, the past 10 years or so excluding last year, I got the largemouth bug and targeted them pretty exclusively. Smallies we’re always a welcome bycatch. Last year I fished for LM and SM about equally. This year, I think I’ll mainly be targeting largemouth again. I’m determined to break my home state PB, and catch a LM in the 7 pound class.

I'm basing that on the fact that you catch significantly larger Bass relative to your location, and you throw big fish baits. 7lb fish anywhere is dynamite, I'm shaking every time and thinking I should sign up for tourneys 😂 8 minutes ago, Jar11591 said: Fished pretty much exclusively for smallmouth as a kid. Get it brother, like Tim you posted so many big fish relative to your area, and you fish those stupid widget spinnerblades that big fish love.....I can't wait to see that fish when you post the pics! 1
Vilas15
Smallies only. Occasionally get a largemouth on accident, but theyre rare enough on the lakes I'm normally on I don't know where I'd start to find one on purpose. That may change this coming year as I fish a new area that I know has more largemouth.
Super User WIGuide Posted March 6 Super User Share Posted March 6 I love fishing for both, but I end up fishing for largemouth more often. Most of the closer lakes around me have a better population of the green ones than the browns if they're present at all. If I'm headed up north a little farther though many lakes have the opposite demographics.
Bankc
I target largemouth, but catch mostly spots. One weird thing here is that the largemouths, smallmouths, and spots all look just about the same. They're all about the same size and color. So it takes a bit of work to figure out the difference. You have to check their tongue and where the mouth ends, because the coloration and dorsal fin usually won't tell you much. And I find so many that blur the lines that I swear they're all regularly cross breeding. And with the lack of spawning habitats in our man-made lakes, that wouldn't surprise me.
Bassbum1016
Being in Southern Ny and a stones throw from CT, I fish for both with equal enthusiasm…..a bass is a bass. Now when I absolutely need to catch one, largemouth……the green ones are easy

Super User WRB Posted March 8 Super User Share Posted March 8 Castiac has a population of Smallmouth the passed 5 years, before that none existed. Casitas has a rare Smallmouth show up occasionally, not enough to target them. Pyramid has both LMB and Smallmouth so I try for Smallies on that lake 1st. DVL has both LMB and Smallmouth, never caught a Smallie there. Cachuma has both and try to target them on that lake. Big Bear has both and they live at different ends of the lake so it’s easy to pick which bass to target. Spotted bas are more common in Central and NorCal lakes, if I am fishing where Spots are located you fish for LMB and catch Spots, no need to target them. Smallmouth in SoCal run 4 lbs max, except Lake Havas and up in NorCal 6 lbs with 9 lbs possible, so that is where to Target Smallies California. Like to catch Smallies but the opportunity isn’t that often. My goal was always targeting Giant LMB, they have become so rare now I target what ever will bite. I have sworn up and down for a couple of years that spots and LM will hybridize in certain man-made environments. And biologists have sworn up and down that I am not a biologist. However, only one of us has the piece of paper that says we're correct on the matter we're swearing about, so I guess Spots and LM don't hybridize. But I swear they do.
PaulVE64
I target smallies when they are in season. Before then its pike and walleye
MN_Bassin24
I have a decent drive to get to any smallmouth waters, but I fish for them any time I can. I have plans to go and fish the Shenandoah River for a few days, and also to head down to the Ozarks to camp and wade for the brown bass there. Maybe I could get my first Spot there too. This combination should cover me for smallies in 2023. Otherwise I'll be chasing Largemouth
Mbirdsley
I do prefer smallies. IF given the choice I will fish for small mouth. In Michigan smallie fall from the trees that’s how plentiful they are. I still enjoy fishing for large mouth though. generally speaking smallies are in deeper lakes and every river/creek with faster current. Though I’ve caught them in lakes that average less than 5ft large mouths generally are in shallower lakes and slower rivers. you will catch them hanging out with each other in the same spots though any where. Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 13 Super User Share Posted March 13 I haven't fished in almost a year now, due my wife's C word situation. When I was fishing on a regular basis, I caught LMB, as has been said here, that are very few lakes with SM bass. I fished DVL pretty often, and tried my best to hook a SM, never happened. The locals there said that most of the SM were around the SS Relief dock, I couldn't find any there..lol

Super User the reel ess Posted March 13 Super User Share Posted March 13 We only have LMB. But I would certainly target brown bass if given the opportunity. It's on the bucket list. I just have to drive bit more than an hour to fish a river that has them. I do target bluegill and crappie regularly. Or I target anything that's in the creek if that's where I am.
