When I was still working I was a forklift driver at a factory. I was off for a week for vacation and when I came back nobody told me they added a stop sign to this one particular area. It hasn't been

  • Do I play hookie to fish?       Why, what did you hear?

  • Not sure I'd call that "hookie" given that you know you're taking the day off in advance.  I always thought playing hookie meant skipping out on work the day of.   I get a lot of time off.

Never. If I took a day off it was with an approved vacation or comp time card. Fortunately, retirement simplifies when I want to fish.

Yes, but I have a pretty flexible job so I can slip away pretty easy and stay in touch via my cell phone for most things that need me.

The hotel I run is right on a big lake so I can take a few minutes and go fish off of our docks. I also host a kids' fishing program on weekends and while I'm mostly baiting hooks and unbuttoning fish for those events I manage to get in a few casts. Lastly, my hotel gives me a little sponsorship money for MLF and BASS events so I fish for work and I will take a day every now and then and state that I have to go practice.

But work keeps me so busy that most of my fishing is in 15-20 minute intervals a few times a week. I haven't done a proper fishing trip in months.

I generally work a 1 month on, one month off. I don't receive vacation or sick pay. When I'm home the only work I have is catching up on home maintenance and projects that my wife dreams up.

I co-own a business with my Dad so playing hookie doesn't exactly work, and if I miss a day then inevitably I'm paying for it when I do get back. That said, I think I am due for a "mental health day"....

No, I don’t really need to.  I’m fortunate enough to work a 24 hrs on/48 hrs off schedule that allows me plenty of time for fishing and pretty much anything else.

I have plenty of times. There's been times in my line of work, I either had something happen the day before and knew I wasn't in the right state of mind, or woke up not feeling like dealing with people. Neither are good things. Always felt it was better for me to take a mental health day instead.

^ Dude - you and the others who do that work need those mental health days at times. What you do, I couldn't (I know this). Thank you and all your brothers and sisters for being out there.

Unwrap a package today.  Socks!  Appropriate for this thread.

I worked evenings at my last job and would try to go out and get some fishing in before work.  Had to stop after the second try because it would just end up with me calling out from the lake.

Goes to show where my priorities lie.

It isn't called HOOKie for nuthin'!

I rarely miss any work, despite having a VERY physically grueling job. So yeah, once in a great while I will. But I'm honest to a fault. I'll tell them I went fishing instead of lying, saying I was sick.

I once had a job that let you take "well" days. You could call in and say "I feel great today, so I am not coming to work." As long as you did not abuse the privilege, there were no questions asked. I would have stayed with that job forever if the pay was better.

I "know a guy" who's taking 4 hours PTO for an eye exam tomorrow afternoon.  This "guy that I know" is considering taking an additional 8 hours on Friday for a 3 1/2 day weekend.

Nothing personal, trying to provoke a little thought here. Certain personalities are drawn towards certain jobs for a reason. What might cause one person stress, might be excitement for another. I wouldn't want to do what @Bluebasser86 does for a living. It appeals to me on zero levels. I'm willing to bet he finds satisfaction with his work on most days. Otherwise, why do it?

I have an engineering mind and a screw it attitude. Suits my job to a T.

I work at a place that is pretty lenient as far as schedule. Provided we weren't crushed with orders, we could take a half day offer or a day to go fishing, with no pay of course. Myself and my buddy often went fishing a couple hours at lunch to a spot up the road, when we both worked there and had the spot. I currently work from home, but for the same company. Thankful for my family and work situation.

I play mini-hooky: local spot 10 minutes from my house. I work from home and so I’ll occasionally do a 2-hour lunch session or start and quit work early and get an evening session in.

Down here in south Florida I do a lotta saltwater fishing for NOAA, so I can always do that at night after work, same with fresh water fishing. In general, I go fishing when I can with or without my job’s blessing. The bite window for early morning is pretty similar for both fresh or salt. Up very early, extra cloths, quick run up the beach or lake, catch the sunrise bite window, back to my truck, clean up & change into work cloths and be in the office by about 9am….if there’s a will, there’s a way! Doesn’t matter if one has a job where off days are limited. No hookie necessary. There’s always time to go fishing, even if it’s a quickie!

Depends on what you mean by hookie.  Had a meeting at 8am.  Left for fishing at 5am, caught a bunch of fish, made the meeting by a hair.  How dare they schedule meetings for 8am!

I’ll just ask the boss for a few hours to fish every once in a while. Then try to get home before my wife does.

If I’ve got a light office day planned, I may sneak out to fish a few hours in the early morning.  Always risky though, because I’m on call 24/7 and those early mornings catch up to me pretty bad now at about 2-3pm.

Absolutely…haven’t taken a sick day in a decade…I’ll throw up, sciatica, Covid, SARS, Ebola, the plague, dislocated knee, hungover, generally just hate everything, I’m coming to work…during the spring, all sick days used up to fish
