How many jig/worm rods do you fish with?

Recommended Posts

Really have gotten into bass fishing this year and throwing a jig might be my favorite.

I really only have one rod that I throw for jigs currently and it's the I believe original (deep purple blank) Mojo Bass Jig and Worm rod.

It seems to get the job done but I'm ready for an upgrade in quality/sensitivity.

So I started doing a little research and it seems many will use at least a couple setups based on the size of the jig/worm.

If I had to guess, I'd say like a 3/8 oz jig and then throw on a trailer is my most used jig right now. But I'm just getting started so that will change I'm sure.

So out of curiosity, how many jig/worm rods do you fish with? You can also add what models and why you fish those if you want.

PS Seems like many say the NRX is the king for fishing jigs/worms with a heck of a warranty but also pricey. I'm not opposed to paying that much, if a cheaper rod can do the same thing I'm all ears.

Thanks!

I am real familiar with the original 6’6” mojo bass jig n worm rod, also the later 7’1” version. Caught lots of good fish on those rods. I have a last gen legend tournament 7’1” mhxf that I’m very fond of for 1/8-1/4oz bitsy bugs. But for 1/4-1/2oz flipping jigs I’m really liking my legend tournament in 7’3” HXF. It’s a really sensitive rod and just the right qualities to make a great jig rod. I would say the victory in 7’3” HXF is 90% of the rod the legend tournament is for $120 less. Both are great! I put a t-rig on one and a jig on the other. They are versatile too.

7'1 MF Mojo(worm/light jigs)

I usually have at least one jig rod and one worm rod tied up and ready to fish any time I'm on the water.

Four of my casting rods are Cabela's branded from the 1990's....they still catch fish. This year I picked up two Scheels Outfitter Pro Angler rods, and two Fenwick HMX (on sale). They all do the job.

Don't get too wrapped up with manufacturer's "technique specific" rod labels.

Find rods that feel good in your hands, have good balance, and fit your budget. Pair up with reels you like...hard to go wrong.

Your frugalness is an inspiration!  I have numerous j/w rods from ml-xh.

When I had my boats and was fishing often my jig & worm rods were custom* made using Lamiglas blanks.

3 rods, 6’10” , 2 were 6 power fast action for jigs and 1 a 5 power fast action for worms or jigs.

Today 1 jig & worm rod the 6’10” 5 power above.

* Lamiglas made between 1980 to 2012, ALX using Lamiglas blanks 2012 to today.

A Fenwick Techna AV 6’6” MHF was in the mix during the 90’s.

Basically 7 total rods over 44 year period.

I don't have any worm or jig specific rods.  I don't have any technique specific rods.  But I also fish from either a kayak or the bank, so I have no desire to pack 30 rods with me every time I go fishing.

Most of the time, I'll have one worm tied on a MH/F rod and one jig tied on a H/F rod.  But depending on the weight and what else I'm fishing with, that can change.

For 3/8th + trailer I use a NRX+ 873c. Ive tried the 893, 853, and 854 and found the 873 to be the best of all worlds. The right length, tip, and power. I also drag footballs in the 1/2 to 5/8ths with it as well. I don’t ever throw a Carolina rig with it.

For 1/4 with trailer I like the St. Croix legend elite 7’ medium fast. Limber tip but plenty of power for finesse jigs. I’ve tried the 893 and P5 Xbites and didn’t like the lack of torque I got. At the time I lived in Tennessee and pulling 3-4lbers away from cover was a concern. I live in Maryland now and I suspect I’d like those sticks a lot more.

Punching and big cover jigs I step into the 7’4” XH Steez.

What cover/depth are you throwing to most often? Where in the country do you live? Do you have a boat or kayak to fish from?

I live in Iowa. Mostly smaller lakes. Heck the one I've fished the most is less than 30 acres.  :)

Depths are less than 10 foot and mostly around submerged weeds.

Another lake I fish is around 400 acres and has some standing timber that I really want to try out.

Right now I'm fishing from a kayak but will hopefully get a boat in the next year or so.

Normally I'm not fishing very deep as I don't have any electronics.

Once I get a boat it will open up a whole new world.

Personally, I’d focus on a slightly lower budget stick and get a budget graph. Being able to see water depth and structure leads to a significantly better time on the water. I fished almost exclusively from a kayak for the last few years and once I could see bottom structure I was able to locate more fish. That submerged tree in 8 feet of water is a spot that can produce time after time.

St. Croix Victory

Daiwa Tat Elite

I’d also throw lighter weights with that depth. No need for 3/4 football jigs when it’s that shallow.

One at a time!  :)  I fish unweighted worms a lot.  Jigs hardly ever unless I'm going to swim one.  I fish shallow water and the bottom isn't conducive for fishing the bottom.  Could just be me.  Hate removing slime and/or grass on every retrieve.  Especially slime.  Ugh!

However, I did buy one rod exclusively for jigs.  Just need to find some place with a decent bottom I can fish from shore.  Rod is a custom MHF.  But I have other rods that would work should that rod not be with me when I got the chance to fish on the bottom.  Doubt they'd be as sensitive, tho.

Total number of suitable rods unknown, but more than you could carry on a couple kayaks or canoes.

I normally have one of each. The worm rod is the same no matter the depth I plan to fish; Quantum Tournament Grade MH and what I consider a Mod/Fast. My jig rods vary. For pitching, I like my 7ft. 3in.Browning Boron/Graphite, MH it has a fairly fast action with just enough flex in the tip section for pitching. If I'll be casting, be it a football, or Arkie jig, it's either a 7ft. St.Croix Premier H/Fast (Fluoro), or a 7ft. Mojo H/Fast for braid.  These are older, moderately priced rods with plenty of sensitivity for this retired basser.

I have several but my favorite is 7 ft 6  Bass Pro Shoos flipping stick heavy  with a good old Ambassador reel Old school but it still gets it done. 15 lb big game mono.

Columbia. I’ve found all of the small lakes near me awful to fish. They are overgrown and unless you’re fishing the surface impossible to present lures properly. I joined FOBA a MD bass club and they have been awesome.

I’ve tried heading to Triadelphia as well but not a lot of luck. Since I’m stuck on the bank my options are pretty limited unless I’m fishing a tourney with the club.

I do not give my rods names! That way if I throw a spinnerbait on my jig rod it doesn't get confused!
