Super User WRB Posted March 31, 2023 Super User Share Posted March 31, 2023 It took 24 years for this thread to go off the rails. Reading this 10 page thread is interesting how many members are no longer posting. The clear consensus regarding use of live bait fit bass is OK when legal. Enjoyed reading Good discussions until 2023. Tom
Glenn Brown
Ever thought of injecting an "air bubble" into a live worm to enhance its wiggling as well as causing the worm to float off the bottom? It will dramatically increase your catch rate:  https://www.amazon.com/Lindy-AC370-Worm-Blower-1-Pack/dp/B002X4AH7M  Hope this helps.  Glenn
greentrout
Fished a new spot yesterday and caught a couple of 2 pounders LMB. While there I observed two young boys were catching Bluegills and using them for bait to catch the LMB. They caught two using that live bait and both were a little over 5lbs. Both were released with one of them being a little bit of a problem. Their method of catching these Bass is perfectly legal in the State of Mississippi. It's not my cup of tea. Good Fishing
DaubsNU1
@greentrout, yep, not my preferred way of bass fishing.  I will tell you though, back in 1996 some buddies and I took a trip to Lake Fork. We pounded the water for three days with plastics and artificials...nothing. Some locals suggested since we traveled all that way, should get some shiners and rig on slip-bobbers...we did, and hammered the bass for two days. Fun times for sure!  When I am walleye fishing it's minnows or crawlers all day long.
Skunkmaster-k
I don’t care if it’s cheating. I’m going to do it anyway. 3
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 13 Global Moderator Share Posted March 13 Hooking them with artificial is cheating . At least give them something to eat instead of poisonous plastic to choke on
greentrout
@DaubsNU1 Back in the day, I too used shiners/minnows to catch the Bass. No longer. Still use minnows for Crappie. Good Fishing
throttleplate
Live bait is now my go to, never leave home without a couple scoops of fathead minnows. I was fishing yesterday in wahpeton nd at the dam and put a fathead minnow on a 1/8 oz ballhead jig with a bobber lookin to catch smallmouth, crappie and walleye, instead i caught this. The setup i was using was 30lb suffix braid, 20 lb fluoro leader with the jig and a shakesphere ultra lite series pole. Fun was hoping i wouldnt get bit off and just as a fellow fisherman came over and netted it for me the line broke. Â 1
Super User gimruis Posted March 13 Super User Share Posted March 13 Both local live bait shops near me closed last year. One had been in business for about 45 years.  I never really used much live bait but I did often use small minnows in the spring time for crappie fishing. I am going to try and have to do it without the aid of live bait this spring because no one sells them anymore. I would usually use both minnows and artificials for crappies in the past. Gonna have to adjust this spring. Super User geo g Posted March 14 Super User Share Posted March 14 Do whatever tickles your fancy, if your going out of a leisurely day on the water.  But for me live bait is about as boring as it gets. I would rather stay home then go fishing with only live bait. To me fishing is all about hitting targeted areas with casts, figuring out a pattern, and then executing techniques that work that day, that hour, and that minute. Now with regards to tournament bass fishing its clearly always cheating!
Susky River Rat
I grew up doing it . I don’t prefer it.  Doesn’t matter to me if others do it. The excitement for me is knowing I cracked the code that day. An the great feeling of that fishing taking it when you least expect it.
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 14 Super User Share Posted March 14 I love fishing shiners for bass. It’s just getting harder to find shiners, with the limited time I have. Bluegills are a good substitute. To me, it’s more sporting to use live bait, because I have to catch them first, keep them alive, and present them where the bass are, and in a manner that appeals to them. It’s a lot more work. As far as gut hooking goes, I don’t gut hook any more bass fishing live bait than artificials. If that’s the main concern, use a circle hook , and gut hooking wont happen much, as long as you don’t leave your bait un attended for long periods of time…

Now that is something I can completely get on board with.. Fortunately, since I don't wake up early for fishing didn't have to watch his video. On main topic, live bait fishing is a different sport that is complemented with a warm summer afternoon, a cooler full of beer and a co-fisherman to chat with. I jus prefer usin artificial cause it's more fun.  I like the reach of lures. You can't cast bait as far as you can a plug. However, when I fished northwestern Ontario for smallmouth, a leech under the canoe was irresistible and you didn't have to wait long, so it wasn't a bit boring.  I'd use both when smallie fishing. I'd glide into an area, fan cast it with lures and then drop a leech over the side. This two-pronged approach produced a lot of 100-bass days.

Super User Swamp Girl Posted March 14 Super User Share Posted March 14 Randy Blaukat isn't a nutball. He's a opinionated fellow angler. I've never heard or seen him lob ad homs in his posts. He simply makes his case.  Yes, he produces a lot of content, but given the direction of fishing, I think he's opining in a hurricane of electronic change.
